It's very common I think. I've been around yonks and I think a few people recognise me, but not many. There's so many folks around and everyone is 'known' by someone, iyswim, but very very few are universally known.

I do think its rather unfortunate to take a name that is extremely similar to someone else's. It leads to confusion for all posters. So if asked politely to change by a regular poster I don't see why you wouldn't ... RL names are irrelevant.
