Become a pilot? It's always been my dream, but life got in the way and I never been able to do it. I'm 31. I just feel like the ones studying aviation are in their early 20s. What do you think?

My cousin has started doing flying lessons and he’s in his 40s.

avocadotofu · 13/07/2019 14:51

I don't think 31 is too old to do it. If it's something you'd really like to do, go for it 😊.

Youvegotafriendinme · 13/07/2019 14:52

My DDad started to learn in his early 40s so never too late!

lastqueenofscotland · 13/07/2019 14:53

As in a commercial pilot or just get a light aircraft licence?
Don’t underestimate how competitive the former is

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/07/2019 14:54

Privately or commercially?

How long is the training? How much would it cost? Do you meet the entry requirements? If commercially, what is the job market like?

At 31, I'd bear in mind that retirement is another 36 years away. That's longer than you've been alive and I bet you think you've covered a lot of ground in 31 years. Well you've got 36 more to go...

Alsohuman · 13/07/2019 14:55

The cut off’s 28 in the RAF. I don’t imagine that applies for training for commercial airlines.

ZaZathecat · 13/07/2019 14:56

Go for it. If you can get on one of the courses you'll have been thoroughly tested and vetted first so they will be confident you can make it.

LostInNorfolk · 13/07/2019 15:00

A commercial pilot? You typically have to pay for your own training and most salaries are low until you have experience- so you have to self fund and self support in 1st years

£100,000 and 2 years for initial qualification

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 13/07/2019 15:23

You are never too old to learn. If you can manage financially is your business.

SavageBeauty73 · 13/07/2019 15:25

Yikes. I didn't know it was £100,000 to train!
