To have noticed an irony

For the most part, any reference to poor spelling and/or grammar on here is leapt upon - in extreme cases I've seen people called cunts for just pointing out an error. There is a huge amount of sympathy for people who express things in a non-standard way, whatever the reason, and even mentioning it causes ire.

On the other hand, on a lot of the Brexit threads, the spelling "forriners" is used to characterise the expressed views of Leave voters. I assume the reason for this is to ridicule them by drawing attention to their spelling - which is odd.

I’m not sure that this is irony

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/07/2019 12:05

Definitely not irony.

I always see that spelling of foreigners to be reflecting the way a stereotype of a racist person might say the word, with a sort of sneer and shrug.

familycourtq · 13/07/2019 12:12

OK, if not an irony, perhaps a paradox.

oh, let's bash the thick leavers shall we, slow day saturday. i never use capitals in my writing on here, too lazy, Smile but by the same token as long as people can understand me then that's okay with me.

SheilaBruce · 13/07/2019 12:18

I thought it was a bit like a colloquialism. You know, like "oop norf", "sarf London", etc.

RedSheep73 · 13/07/2019 14:00

? Not sure I understand what you are getting at?

I suppose there is a certain amount of sympathy for poor spellers generally - which I don't share at all because I am a spelling Nazi, apparently - because they may not know any better, didn't get proper schooling bla bla.

Whereas there is zero sympathy from remainers to poor spelling leavers, because they have got us all into a bloody awful mess, so they are fair game.

people who express things in a non-standard way This is a curious way of putting it. School reports definitely don't define lack of literacy in such forgiving terms.
