To have completed on a house purchase whilst out of country

I completed on a very long and complicated house purchase yesterday but am out of the country in South East Asia for another few weeks.. AIBU to think that this is the most stress free way to do it even though I can't see my new property until I get home. It had been the most stressful problematic purchase going and then it all calmed down as I left the country. Am I mad or should I have cancelled travel or should I have put off the completion date? FYI I think what I have done has been the best way lol as I can chill and drink cocktails and was so relaxed receiving solicitors email to say it was all done.. Just after others opinions 😊

Are you on the cocktails now by any chance!

BlueSkiesLies · 13/07/2019 11:16

Congrats!

Go have a celebratory new house drink

Omfgareyouforreal · 13/07/2019 11:17

Oh god yes!! 😂🍹But just asking as some friends have told me I should have cancelled my travels which I think is stupid, given it would cost more to lose out on what we paid to come away than the extra interest charged on the mortgage till we get back.

They're being daft! No need to be in the country to complete. House isn't going anywhere!
Enjoy your cocktails and SE Asia. I wish I was back there again ...

Butchyrestingface · 13/07/2019 11:33

Presumably you have already seen the new property at some point though?

Omfgareyouforreal · 13/07/2019 11:36

@butchyrestibgface yes of course. But friends are saying I should be there incase there were any problems and why on earth would I consider still being away... Well I will tell them, it has taken the stress out!!! Cocktail at the ready 😂🍹

I’ve done this twice! No issues at all and quite stress free!

Grumpos · 13/07/2019 13:26

Did the same years ago, I was moving from ex’s property into an empty house so there was no other person in the chain (probate sale).
I was abroad on holiday and solicitor handled everything, I picked up keys from the estate agent when I got back.
No fuss no bother. Brilliant!

Omfgareyouforreal · 13/07/2019 13:52

@grumpos pretty much same as I'm doing. I'm moving from my narcissistic partner/ex partners house to this one. There was a ton of problems with the title deeds so it felt like it would never happen but here we are... I relax and it all goes through nicely.. Plus seller's were nice enough to give me a set of keys before I headed off so I can go straight there in return.

Have a Singapore Sling on me. You’re a very sensible woman.

Omfgareyouforreal · 13/07/2019 13:56

@alsohuman I literally had a Singapore sling like 20 minutes ago... I hearbye dedicate it to you lol. 😁

Cheers, m’dear! 🍸

As long as you’ve arranged insurance and do things like meter readings (or have the agent do it) and that sort of admin there’s no reason to be there. If there was a last minute hitch you can handle it by phone whether two miles or 2000 miles away.

Jaxhog · 13/07/2019 14:00

As long as the new property is insured and secure, I don't see the problem. I think I'd get a friend to pass by on a regular basis, just to make sure though.

Di11y · 13/07/2019 14:42

we did this 12 years ago whilst on honeymoon, v stressful - no smart phones to check emails then. time difference etc 😫

Omfgareyouforreal · 13/07/2019 15:08

House is all insured and friends passing by so all good that way. Seller's have text me that they have given final readings for meter etc.

@Di11y omg I can imagine how stressful it would be 11 years ago without today's tech! Main thing is... Did you have a good honeymoon and do you love your property?
