Heathrow summer holiday shutdown threats

C0rnfl0wer · 12/07/2019 20:48

So having been sweating about BA pilots striking, then climate change drone attacks it now transpires Heathrow will be shut down the day we are due to fly due to Heathrow staff striking .

Fed up with holiday makers being held to ransome in the school holidays. We’ve had the shitiest of shit years, saved for ages for our trip and now have two weeks of sweating and probably a cancelled holiday as the shut down is due the day we fly.

Doing this the day schools break up and the busiest weekend of the year is just a nasty thing to do and surely kills off any possible sympathy for causes.

They won't charge you to move the flight if it is cancelled.

How long are you going for?

Screamanger · 12/07/2019 22:44

So how should they make their point in other ways at other times then?

Leave and work for better paying airlines.

Unionization has been banned by DH’s employers. He says his day is more efficient and less stressful without unions. He hates working for heavily unionized clients. The project always costs more and takes twice as long.

apacketofcrisps · 12/07/2019 22:45

@screamanger how can you ban people from being in a union?

C0rnfl0wer · 12/07/2019 22:48

All the headlines say the same, unions say the plan is to shut Heathrow down. How could you reroute if the whole airport and others have been impacted?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/07/2019 22:49

Maximum disruption is the whole point of a strike.

Tube, Southern and now SW railways and do on.

Nothing you can do. Workers have a right to strike.

C0rnfl0wer · 12/07/2019 22:53

And enough with the guiltmongering thanks. Like many we’ve suffered unpleasant life events. Don’t feel privileged at all just pissed off hugely unsympathetic and frustrated. We’ve saved and frankly don’t deserve this. Families can’t win. Pay eye watering school holiday prices and have strikes dangled over you.

OP posts:
C0rnfl0wer · 12/07/2019 22:54

I’m aware there is nothing we can do.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/07/2019 22:54

Don’t pay them then.

Expensive for holidays aren’t a human right.

Iltavilli · 12/07/2019 22:56

Guiltmongering? From someone happy to blame the poor for not being able to jet off on holiday.

Check yourself OP not others.

NoBaggyPants · 12/07/2019 22:56

If Heathrow closes (which is very unlikely), other airports are available.

As for the rest. Boo fucking hoo.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 12/07/2019 22:56

Have you actually read the article you've just posted? Nowhere does it say that the whole airport WILL be shut down. "Could potentially shut down"
British Airways, which has the Heathrow, says it plans to operate as normal.
A BA spokesperson said: “Heathrow airport have assured us that they will have robust contingency plans in place to avoid any disruption to travellers.”

British Airways pilots are balloting for industrial actionn* in a dispute over pay. The voting ends on 22 July and a strike could be called from 5 August onwards.

So, nothing definite at the moment on the BA pilot strike and Heathrow are saying it will have robust contingency plans in place.

I get that it's worrying and frustrating but you don't seem willing to make enquiries as to possible solutions IF there are problems.

C0rnfl0wer · 12/07/2019 22:57

We have family to visit and a wedding to do.Hmm

Your holidays aren’t a right is all very well but families do have the right to save, spend their money how they wish and to expect what they’ve paid for to happen.

OP posts:
coldlighthappier · 12/07/2019 22:58

Wow OP, I had some sympathy for you but your attitude is disgusting and your wedding/holiday is in NO WAY more important than what people are striking for... what about that can’t you understand?

NoBaggyPants · 12/07/2019 22:58

I think Screamanger is in the US, where workers have even less rights than they do here. Definitely not something to be proud of.

NoBaggyPants · 12/07/2019 23:00

You'll get to New York. You might be a few hours or even a day late but that's not the end of the world.

C0rnfl0wer · 12/07/2019 23:00

How are other airports available? If flights are cancelled everybody will want the same alternatives. We can’t afford to just cough up for more flights anyway.

OP posts:
apacketofcrisps · 12/07/2019 23:01

Oh okay nobaggy I was a bit confused! Cornflower we get it, you’re a family. No one wants their travel plans interrupted but you seem to be taking it as a personal attack on families?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/07/2019 23:02

Your holidays aren’t a right is all very well but families do have the right to save, spend their money how they wish and to expect what they’ve paid for to happen.

Two words - small print.

HairyFloppins · 12/07/2019 23:02

We are flying to New York on the 4th August, so I'm not sure if it effects us. But if it does, I will take my chances and fully support the workers. My life doesn't depend on it.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 12/07/2019 23:02

You sound lovely. Little beams of light and loveliness must radiate from you.

C0rnfl0wer · 12/07/2019 23:05

No I don’t think ruining the travel plans on the busiest weekend of the year many families are stuck with is ok. Won’t be changing my mind .Demonise me all you like you know nothing about my life or what options will be available. I doubt you’ll find many of the thousands of people impacted throughout the summer that sympathetic either.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/07/2019 23:07

Whatever.

ilovesooty · 12/07/2019 23:11

Thank goodness that in the UK union membership is available and in most cases a basic human right.

kazza446 · 12/07/2019 23:12

EasyJet are striking at Stansted too over most of the summer holidays. Oh the joy!

NoBaggyPants · 12/07/2019 23:13

Look a few posts up, another affected traveller will be supporting the workers. I've been heavily delayed by travel strikes, and used that time to talk to the workers and understand their position. You can change your life when you actually bother to listen and understand.

What date are you flying on? And for the third time, if your flight is cancelled you'll be rescheduled free of charge.

Rather than mindlessly ranting, look at the other options available to you. And sort out the attitude, you'll get no help from the non striking staff if you're like this.
