To want to take my 9 month old to see Reel Big Fish

They are my favourite band. My baby loves them too. We’d take her in the sling and pop in some headphones. No mosh pit obvs, we’d stay at the back.

My husband is not keen. Am I crazy? Money is really tight and we have no friends or family near by who could look after her.

I wouldn’t. I’ve seen them and they are especially loud because of the ska percussion side. Far too loud for a baby, IMO.

Ps I love them too, can you pay a babysitter?

Seaandsand83 · 12/07/2019 20:48

Ooh where are they playing!? I mean, not ideal for a baby 😬 can you just go?

TheDarkPassenger · 12/07/2019 20:48

Just seen you’re skint, what about a neighbouring kid? Does your babe sleep okay?

ViciousTrollop · 12/07/2019 20:49

YABU

because they're fucking dreadful live.

Spare the poor bairn's ears.

TaylorsSwimShorts · 12/07/2019 20:50

As someone who took her 10 week old boy ( and his sisters) to see Faith No More at Reading, I'd def say go for it, my kids have all regularly been to gigs and festivals in utero, newborn, toddlers through to teens ...hasnt done them much harm...🙈🤣

MrsElizabethShelby · 12/07/2019 20:51

Would I take my 9mo to a far too loud busy gig? No.

Large numbers of drunk people and babies do not mix. You will likely find the venue has an age restriction anyway.

And I'm the biggest ska punk fan I know.

Cheby · 12/07/2019 20:51

So you’d be standing? No, sorry, I would do it (despite being a big fan myself).

If you could get seated tickets, so there wasn’t any chance of you being jostled or shoved about by drunk people then I’d consider it. As long as you got the baby used to wearing ear defenders beforehand so she would reliably keep them on (I strongly suspect neither of mine would ah e at 9 months unless asleep).

If you’re standing then I definitely wouldn’t do it. It’s busy, people are drunk, they’re in and out to the bar or whatever and they won’t be taking care because they won’t be expecting to see a baby in a sling there.

mrsmacaw · 12/07/2019 20:51

They are playing in Portsmouth in November. Do you think it would be too loud even with headphones on? Although we could probably push to pay a babysitter I actually think she’d really enjoy it. We take her out a lot at the moment In the sling and she loves dancing around the kitchen with me at home.

Also, I loved reel big fish as a teen but have you actually listened to Aaron's lyrics as an adult female.

He seriously hates women.

Devastated when I realised and now I don't listen as much to them any more. If at all ☹️

MrsElizabethShelby · 12/07/2019 20:59

OP contact the venue before your spend your money. You are clearly determined to go and take her. I can't imagine they would be insured for babies bit you never know.

A live gig is very different to volume controlled music at home. My children would have cried and cried regardless of ear protectors due to the sheer volume and vibrations.

Also consider your own ear protection because my ear ring after a gig and I couldn't hear my baby cry!

MamaOomMowWow · 12/07/2019 21:01

I saw them live and my ears years ago were ringing afterwards.

Could you go on your own and leave DD with DH? You'd only need one ticket so it would be cheap!

mrsmacaw · 12/07/2019 21:04

Thanks for the input everyone. I think at probably going to be a no, good to hear others opinions.

They are loud live. An open air festival with ear defenders is different to an indoor gig IMO.

It’s a shame you’re not closer, I’m looking for a babysitter for us to go too - we could have swapped! - but we’re up north Sad

Oysterbabe · 12/07/2019 21:07

Yabu, go on your own.

ibblebibbledibble · 12/07/2019 21:10

Don’t do it. Your baby won’t enjoy it, they’ll have no idea this racket is the noise mummy dances to in the kitchen.
