To call my DS the same as my neighbours?

We very recently moved house into a new build Estate and I am due DS2 any day now and have settled on a name.

The name isn't common and it took us ages to choose it. I have just met my next door neighbour who's DS1 is 8 weeks old and is called the same name!!!

I didn't know how to react as we were not telling anyone our name until he is here but now I'm worried they will think we copied them because it's quite rare. Not only that but this is a small village and the boys will be in the same class all through school. The whole point of us choosing an uncommon name was so our little guy would be relatively unique.

WIBU to go ahead with the name regardless? We have nothing else in reserve but I feel the wind has just been knocked out my sails.

No I don't think so.

How about Spencer or Stirling?

Or for a different style Steven or Shaun?

I wouldn't go with Struan either OP, although I love the name (and know 2 little Struans). What about another Scottish type name?

Nairn
Lachlan
Brodie
Innes
Rory
Finlay

Lachlan is lovely.

luckylavender · 13/07/2019 07:30

I love Lachlan

I think I would look at another name.

If it's important to you that the name be unique I'd take this as a blessing as it's clearly not as unusual or different as you thought. Perhaps it's growing in popularity,

I named my son a name I thought was not very common at all...nearly 6 years later it's top 15.

I don’t think Struan is particularly unique. I know a 5 year old and a six month old with that name, both in the same small Scottish town.

Bignicetree · 13/07/2019 11:00

Quite a few Struans in my town.
The name always makes me think of menstruationHmm

FairfaxAikman · 13/07/2019 12:00

If your looking for Scottish names, Nairn and Blair have a similar feel to Struan.
If it's uncommon Scottish names you want maybe try Iain, Stuart or (surprisingly) Andrew.

AnneOfCleavage · 13/07/2019 12:56

How about missing off the S and calling him Truan? It's as close to what you love without absolutely copying neighbours per se although I don't see an issue with calling him same name at all.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/07/2019 13:02

I was watching Chariots of Fire the other day - call him Eric.

I love the name Struan, it was in our list first time. I've only met 1 Struan since my eldest was born and we live in the city.
We also loved Nairn second time round of you are looking for an alternative!
