WIBU to cut off my nose to spite my face? (House purchase related)

I am a FTB and completely inexperienced, so genuinely looking for some honest feedback. I'll give as much context as I can.

I made an offer on a house £5k under the asking price. This was accepted. The house needs a lot of work.

During the viewing the estate agent said that the house was being sold as-is - so we get the good (all kitchen appliances, some old, some newer) as well as the bad (attic full of old and broken furniture, HUGE gravestone in the garden to mark where the family pet was buried).

The sellers live outside of the UK so they would have to pay to have the house cleared and it would be a hassle for them.

With one month to go until the exchange date, we got the fixtures and fittings list today and they're asking for £50 per each kitchen appliance.

This is obviously very cheap, but I plan on renovating the kitchen next year so would have to clear the old appliances out anyway. I was going to live with what was there for the time being. I would incur the cost of removing everything obviously.

I'm annoyed that they have gone back on their word. They're now saying they will call some family who are still in the UK to ask if they want the appliances and we can have anything they don't take for free. I'm biting my tongue to avoid asking sarcastically if they will also see if anyone fancies a 3ft gravestone and some broken chairs.

If they do this I want the house cleared of the broken furniture and ridiculous bloody gravestone. I will obviously have to buy new kitchen appliances sooner than planned.

DP thinks that we should just take the hit but I am incredibly annoyed. If I had known this at the beginning I would have budgeted differently and insisted the house was cleared upfront.

We moved into a house which was meant to be cleared but the loft and garage were full of rubbish. We ended up having a huge battle to get it cleared by the previous owner and despite him being a in breach of contract we were advised by our solicitor that there was very little we could do.

We ended up out of pocket to remove some of it and he took days to shift what we put in the driveway.

Push for full vacant possession and look for cheap appliances on eBay etc.

Ensure the agent checks the property is vacant before contract completion and if possible go with them to confirm that way you shouldn’t get any total nightmares.

Yes, they're pretty big - good cover from the neighbours, I suppose!

Yep- all or nothing!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 12/07/2019 18:03

I agree the sold as is comment means nothing. The vendor is given a list to indicate what is being left what is being taken and what is for sale. Have you seen this list?

Is that the fixtures and fittings list? Because that's how I found out about these random charges.

The house is empty otherwise, there aren't even any curtain rods or anything. There's a fixed loo roll holder just looking at the list again and that's included for free Hmm

Your solicitor should have advised you not to give notice on you flat until exchange has taken place.

Kitchenstress · 12/07/2019 18:12

We can stay with my parents if it comes to it, but we have 2 months left until we need to move out and 1 month until the "target" completion date. I was hoping that a month's overlap would be enough as we are both chain free.

And if the falls through we can just rent for somewhere again, I'm not really worried about that.

How stressful but I would take the advice given on here. The people we bought from took two sets of curtains that were included in the sale. We let the solicitor know thinking it would be easy to sort but apparently we
Would have to take them to the small claims court 🤷‍♀️ That would cost £215 and whilst the curtains were only about £60 in total, it was the principle that someone had nicked our stuff 🤦‍♀️

Crockof · 12/07/2019 18:50

You just made my day. Holy fuck that gravestone is amazing. What is buried under it is my next question...... Grandma??

Crockof · 12/07/2019 18:51

Op really sorry I'm no help with your actual question.

Itscoldouthere · 12/07/2019 19:31

How many ‘pets’ are buried in the garden ?
Perhaps it was a really large dog, or pony 🐎
I second what others have said, tell them you don’t want their old appliances or any other junk left.
We paid £50 for a crappy old cooker which was useless, my house needed complete renovations, we just went out and bought a new fridge freezer and range cooker which we then planned into our new kitchen, (I had to wait about a year before the new kitchen it was ready) but at least I wasn’t cooking on a crappy cooker for all that time.

Hahaha I wouldn't like to guess! Might be a nice fertile spot to plant some nice flowers though!

I wouldn’t pay, my guess is they’re trying it on.

People we were buying from listed a wooden corner garden seat on the fixtures and fittings list-they wanted £150. We said no thank you, they could take it.

Surprise surprise they let it behind Confused

Any update op?

user1486131602 · 22/07/2019 12:02

Nope! That doesn’t form part of your contract.
So, either they go ahead leaving all the things that formed part of the contract agreed or they need to clean the house out at their cost and then accept a lower offer.
I’m surprised that your solicitor didn’t tell them where to go!
