Who does NOT get teachers end of term gifts?

My DH always says it's pathetic buying gifts for teachers. I've done it every July and Christmas for both my kids for the past 5 years. Often buying for the teacher and 3-4 teaching assistants.

He said he never did this and only the suck up kids do it.

I just thought it was what you do.

My DC are still pre-school age but I might not do it. It wasn't done when I was at school and I'd never heard of it before being on MN.

When did it become a thing?

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 11/07/2019 20:43

At the school DD goes too it’s the done thing.

However, I haven’t bought anything for the last 2 years. DD has had 5 teachers due to staffing issues and I am not buying something for someone who has had minimal input in her teaching.

Spiderpants · 11/07/2019 20:56

I would normally, but this year I will only be buying for my youngest teachers because my oldest 2 have had multiple teachers and a very disruptive year of teaching

MyOpinionIsValid · 11/07/2019 21:01

Nope. They are paid to do a job. A teacher would have to be utterly outstanding. I do send in trays of cakes to the general staffroom, because the caretakers, cleaners, office staff etc equally contribute to my childs education.

I sent flower to the head of pastoral when he left Y11

Hellywelly10 · 11/07/2019 21:02

I dont do it, i have enough trouble keeping up with birthdays etc. But its a nice thing i think?

CMOTDibbler · 11/07/2019 21:06

Nope. DS is just finishing yr 8, and I've bought one teacher a present in that time (yr2ish) as she had really gone above and beyond with him.

SandraOhshair · 11/07/2019 21:06

Nope, I dont. Imagine if every parent did! 30 random presents. No one wants that.

petiteonion · 11/07/2019 21:07

It was the norm when I was at primary school. Still the norm in dd's school.

We now give a small gift to class teacher but go into school v early on the in-service day right before new term starts with bags of Danish pastries, bagels and pancakes etc for all. (It is a small school with 18 staff)

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/07/2019 21:07

I never did.

gotmychocolateimgood · 11/07/2019 21:08

I do because I'm a teacher and know how hard they work. Some parents have clubbed together to buy gift vouchers, but I made cards with my DCs and bought small gifts I know they will like. You don't gave to buy anything, but a thank you card is much appreciated.

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/07/2019 21:10

Never did, 4 children through primary and junior school. No need at all, if you are happy with their teaching send a card. No need to add to the pile of crap most people own.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/07/2019 21:12

I have never bought presents. DS is now in year 8.

SoyDora · 11/07/2019 21:13

My DC have made their own thank you cards for their teachers (reception and pre school), and I’ve put some cash in an envelope for the pre school (charity funded).

Di11y · 11/07/2019 21:14

I've contributed £5 to class gifts to cover the teacher and TAs in DD's reception class. bargain and I think they'll get JL vouchers so at least something useful.

RozHuntleysStump · 11/07/2019 21:14

No. They don’t need 30 x cheap tat or cheap wine.

lastqueenofscotland · 11/07/2019 21:15

My in-laws and both headmasters and admit to binning or giving away a lot of the stuff they get given Blush
Only so many best teacher mugs/keyrings you need

SprogletsMum · 11/07/2019 21:15

I don't buy gifts. We're making cards this weekend but I have 3 dc in school so a total of 12 adults who they are regularly in a classroom with and I'm not a millionaire. If I only had 1 dc I'd think about it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/07/2019 21:15

I do every year except when DD had a dreadful teacher I still hate her.

She made something this year. Utterly dreadful but he loved it!

Loubylouchirino · 11/07/2019 21:16

I don’t buy gifts, and I am saying that as a teacher myself.

lazylinguist · 11/07/2019 21:16

I don't usually and I'm a teacher. I have done when dc have had a great primary class teacher or secondary form teacher for several years who was great, but normally no.

ArtichokeAardvark · 11/07/2019 21:17

Depends on the school. A friend of mine teaches at a very expensive boarding school near London and her pile of presents at the end of the year puts the Harrods Hall of Luxuries to shame. Lots and lots of rich international parents... She gets designer handbags and the works!

Loubylouchirino · 11/07/2019 21:18

Most of my class have written me letters or drawn me pictures during their golden time or breaks and lunch and they mean so much more than something they’ve bought. My own children have been the same with their own teachers.

OpenYourEyes · 11/07/2019 21:19

Nope I don't buy them anything, they chose that job and are paid for it.

I did however send a card to one teacher telling her how grateful I was for the difference she made to my daughter. She really was exceptional and I felt it was nice to recognise it.

U2HasTheEdge · 11/07/2019 21:19

Me!

bridgetreilly · 11/07/2019 21:19

Plenty of people don't and it's never, ever expected. Especially not for multiple TAs as well as the class teacher. And, honestly, teachers mostly don't want the kind of things people give anyway, especially not 30 times over. A nice card with something written by the child is plenty.
