To ask how to prepare the perfect jacket potato

I microwave for a few minutes then place in a hot oven for 20 minutes or so to make the skin crispy but it’s not quite right.

I crave that thick, chewy potato skin and soft, fluffy potato inside.

Will someone please tell me how to achieve this? It will make me so happy 😁

It’s gotta be low and slow!

Pierce, a little 1 cal spray and some salt, wrap in tin foil then oven for a few hours Grin

LissyBussy · 11/07/2019 20:13

But that would take several hours wouldn’t it? Is it best to cook from raw then?

I have a Remoska cooker (Google if you’ve never heard of them). Brush spud with oil, place in cooker for 45 mins - perfect jacket spuds.

lazylinguist · 11/07/2019 20:16

1 cal spray?! What madness is that? And what's the point if you're going to slather the inside with butter (because what'sthe point otherwise)?

No microwaving. Bake at 180 for an hour and a half, after rubbing with olive oil and salt if you like.

Name7 · 11/07/2019 20:17

Olive oil and salt over the skin. In oven until cooked. Around an hour at 180 to 200 depending on size.

CherithPonsonby · 11/07/2019 20:18

I don’t like the tin foil method.

Scrub, pierce, top shelf gas six (crap oven) for an hour, or more like 1.5 hours. The crispier the better.

I normally cook 4; eat two and do the other two for half an hour again the next day. Yumyumyum.

I probably overdo them a bit!

But slower and lower might be betterer.

Ok cool thank you!

yes this.

pierce though or they explode. Trust me Grin

No oil. Put water on the skin, then salt. Makes the skin v crispy

ethelfleda · 11/07/2019 20:21

Start with good potatoes, OP. They have to be Marabel or similar. They have a gorgeous yellow colour inside when roasted.
Don’t cover in foil! You have to have crispy skin!
And yes to an hour and a half at 200 and NO microwaving.
Put proper butter on them.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/07/2019 20:37

Pierce, rub with oil and salt, cook for at least 1.5 hours but honestly I would rarely eat one before 2 hours have passed.

Take it out, wrap your fist and wrist in a clean tea towel then carefully smash the potato hard to open it up. Amazing. Really want one now.

Fizzypoo · 11/07/2019 20:41

Butter and salt, real butter not spreadable crap on the outside. I cook mine for 1.5 to 2 hrs.

Mm I want jacket potato now

Napqueen1234 · 11/07/2019 20:44

stick a knife in them for even cooking, 1-1.5 hours in 200 degree oven. I don’t oil, salt anything just straight in and they’re always super crispy Grin I never ever ever get a jacket potato in cafe etc as they’re always microwaved and grim

SamBeckett · 11/07/2019 20:53

I agree with @Napqueen1234 i do not salt or oil / butter mine . I only use very big spuds
I used to work a five hour shift Id put the spud in on about gas mark 1 and bung a couple in on a low shelf , and a pyrex bowl full of beans and cheese on the bottom of the oven before I went out . 6 hours later best cheap tea in the world ready for me when I got home from work .
