To wear harem pants in Istanbul?

Or will I just look like a total idiot. You'd get away with a kimono top in Tokyo or a kilt skirt in Scotland. But would harem pants in Turkey stand out like a sore thumb? I've never been but they are a very comfy and cool part of my summer wardrobe and I want to bring them if I can. I've a lovely plain white top to go with them.

harem pants haram means forbidden by Islamic Law

El0die · 11/07/2019 20:22

Me neither @ElloBrian .
OP are you worried you'll be accused of cultural misappropriation, too hot or a fashion faux pas?
Aren't harems just like better cut trackies anyway????
There's a nother thread tonight asking if people literally LOL at MN posts. I haven't LOLed at this but I have definitely smiled at the suggestions of curly toed slippers and a fez.

TheClitterati · 11/07/2019 20:22

I've been to Turkey several times and I don't recall anyone ever wearing harem pants. GrinI'd say they'd be quite good to wear there though because they would be fairly cool. I wouldn't be wearing jeans in Turkey except in winter.

CrazyToast · 11/07/2019 20:32

If you arent sure just take them and suss it out when you get there but generally if they are comfy/practical/good for hot weather then wear them. I doubt anyone will really notice.

SabineUndine · 11/07/2019 20:34

@TheChain you should see me oil myself up for Greece!

Alsohuman · 11/07/2019 20:35

You’ll boil in jeans, don’t even think about wearing them.

ChiaraRimini · 11/07/2019 20:39

Are you worried you might get put in a harem Op?

LakieLady · 11/07/2019 20:41

YABVU to go to Turkey, where they persecute the Kurds and generally have an appalling human rights record.

What you drape your nether regions in is insignificant, in the scheme of of things.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 11/07/2019 20:51

Why would you carry your carpet @Spaceprincess, that’d be like pushing your car! 😂

ambereeree · 11/07/2019 20:56

@Embracethechaos Grin

ambereeree · 11/07/2019 20:57

Don't worry OP wear them. All tourists do.

You should have seen the patterned dresses I wore in the Czech Republic

Can one wear a cardigan in west Wales?

feministwithtitsin · 11/07/2019 21:37

I did this a few years ago, when harem pants were popular over here too. Didn't think anything of it.

Got lots of weird looks and people laughing. Don't do it. I think people assumed I was in pj's Grin,

TrainWWYD · 11/07/2019 21:40

Please don’t anyone wear them anywhere

Unless you were going for the “adult wearing a big soggy nappy” look

Happyspud · 11/07/2019 23:20

@PanGalaticGargleBlaster, no, I'm not trying to blend in with the locals by wearing harem pantsGrin. But you knew that.

On a separate note, why does anyone still do the biscuit thing? It’s totally unoriginal and unfunny. And does anyone give a shit about being told “have my first biscuit”. Isn’t it time to ban them?

funnyfuckers · 11/07/2019 23:27

Harem pants are my go to travel/plane/airport wear and we go to Turkey a lot. I have never once thought they would offend anyone? My children on the other hand think they are ridiculous 'mums got her crappy aeroplane pants on again". I'm sincerely hoping now I've not upset the majority of Turkish airport and hotel workers over the last 10 years Hmm

BadLad · 11/07/2019 23:29

This thread reminds me of Going For Gold (1990s lunchtime quiz show).

Henry Kelly: You're from Holland, Jens. (Pause). Do you wear clogs?

sabs22 · 11/07/2019 23:29

Bit off track......but a kilt is not a skirt!

foreverhanging · 11/07/2019 23:38

What. Just.... what

foreverhanging · 11/07/2019 23:40

Don't forget a hat to keep you out of the sun

@funnyfuckers, I didnt really think they would offend anyone (though did want to be sure) but more thought I might look really stupid like they were kind of a joke clothes there or considered really naff.

@sabs22, I know, but people often don't wear an actual kilt but a skirt that looks like a kilt thinking they are looking all Scottish. Kind of like my harem pants that I'm sure just look like a knock off of the real thing. Thats why I said kilt skirt instead of kilt.
