To think I have very clever cat?

I went out last night in just my socks, to water the hanging baskets, came In with dirty, wet sock so left them by the front door to save me going down stairs (we live on three floors) I've just gone downstairs and my cat has carried one of my socks and put it by the washing machine.

Aibu to think I have the cleverest cat in the world?

@AnnaMagnani hahaha! Yes, my cat’s territory is also very small; don’t think she goes further than the two gardens either side of ours. And maybe not even into them - just balancing on the fence!

My auntie called her an “idiot cat” and a “perverse little maggot” the other day, which was a step too far. We can insult her, not other folk.

She has all black fur so is struggling in the heat at the moment and does prefer to be outside at the moment generally.

bobstersmum · 11/07/2019 09:22

Yes that's clever! We had a cat a long time ago that used to fetch, I think he thought he was a dog..

Oldraver · 11/07/2019 09:22

Our cat is so stupid OH says it's not worth getting a cat flap.

Ernie is still protesting at the food maze I bought, he sits and stares at it willing the food to fall down

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2019 09:43

Grin @Oldraver. We already had one. We used to have a very cool, very clever cat, we actually got a new door recently, and didn’t replace the cat flap.

Freesunglasses · 11/07/2019 10:05

Clever cat also plays fetch with a marble. The other sock is still where I left it.
She walks round the house yapping away to herself. She brings me a sachet of her food to open when she's hungry, she's always brought us stuff, hats, scarfs, dirty knickers Grin
She's also the most beautiful cat in the world.

Beautiful cat OP Smile Is she a Russian Blue? I’ve had a couple of Russian Blues and they were definitely smarter than most cats.

I now have a whippet and he is very friendly and handsome and really not smart at all. Good thing I love him.

Andromeida59 · 11/07/2019 10:40

We have a part Russian Blue and she also likes to steal socks, tights, bras, dresses, hats etc. She makes the most horrendous noise when she does it. Even from her being a little kitten she's always been very clean. When accidentally locked in a room, upon being freed she ran to the litter tray to pee rather than going in the room.

We also discovered that she can open a door from the inside (they're locked in a room overnight when our lodger stays). We thought our lodger had let them out. Nope it was our cat. Now the larger of the two can open doors from the outside and the smaller one can open them from the inside.

We had another cat, sadly passed, she was part Siamese and very bright. She'd often play fetch with us.

MorganKitten · 11/07/2019 10:45

Mine know that the morning alarm going off means food is likely to happen soon. One will play fetch, both open doors, they have a bucket for toys and will put them back in there. My ex taught them not to dig claws in by repeating a word at them and they stopped.

Piglet89 · 11/07/2019 11:41

Cat logic: still sleeps on floor.

My cat can turn on the tv. Only does it when we are out and she needs company. She has good taste in programming too!

Owlbert · 11/07/2019 14:14

That's pretty impressive! I used to have a cat that used the toilet and opened doors. The 2 I have now are very different 1 miaows to be out/in of partially open doors and to get down from trees/fences he has climbed up. The other used to be a kleptomaniac but seems to have grown out of it luckily as I always thought I would have angry neigbours knocking on the door!

pisspawpatrol · 11/07/2019 14:43

@piglet89 my girl does the same thing! She just walks head on at the pigeon, whilst the pigeon watches and then flies away.

Piglet89 · 11/07/2019 14:56

😂😂😂

Think I’d prefer a slightly dense cat to one that brings “presents” though. My parents have adopted a kind of wild cat and it eats everything put in front of it, including random scraps like porridge!!! They returned from holiday one day and it was sitting outside their back door, with a rat in front of it, which it had sliced right down the belly and was gobbling the innards!!!

🤮

BinkySodPlop · 11/07/2019 15:06

My cat was not hugely clever. Spent much of the summer in a hebe bush, stoned out of her mind. Often lying on her back, trying to waft passing butterflies into her mouth with her feet as she couldn't really chase / hunt.

Actually, reading that back, it sounds like a great life! Maybe she wasn't so stupid after all... Smile

Minkies11 · 11/07/2019 15:07

One of my cats brought down my most daring pairs of knickers when we had visitors. He is clever but his timing is shit!

ozymandiusking · 11/07/2019 15:07

Freesunglasses, Does your cat have Siamese in her? They like to carry thing, and are very intelligent.

Al2O3 · 11/07/2019 15:12

One of our cats from years ago learned from the postman the way to get the front door open was to bang the door knocker. It was a big heavy old oak door and the knocker was a cast iron and heavy one in a listed building so no cat flap was possible. A neighbour saw the cat stretch up, then hook his paw around the knocker, lifting it up and make it bang. He graduated to opening some of the internal doors by jumping up grasping both paws round the door handle then swinging the weight of his body against the door. Gradually it would open enough so he would drop to the floor and walk through. Never got into the fridge though, unlike Tom.

overnightangel · 11/07/2019 15:39

“My theory is that cats are remarkably clever, they're just lazy as fuck so they get humans to do everything for them 😂”

Ha ha some of these replies are funny!
We took on a stray, pregnant, semi wild cat a few years ago who then had 3 kittens and clever cat was one of them, the other two were black and white. We didn't want another cat but when we saw she was grey we decided to keep her, no idea if she has pedigree In her or not.

She's very affectionate too, thinks nothing of waking me in the middle of the night to be stroked and it HAS to be both hands.

Big cat mostly likes to kill and eat rodents, but will only drink from the tap in the bathroom, so either rushes in with you, or sits in there yelling. Little cat hangs around the house getting shut in cupboards, and likes to steal ornaments off the Christmas tree. Neither is very bright, but can both push and pull doors open (big cat is much better at it though).

funnelfanjo · 11/07/2019 16:28

Our cat is grumpy and not very pretty. Turns into a devil cat at the vet. Not the sharpest claw on the paw either. But is surprisingly good at hunting rodents - trouble is she eats what she catches and then leaves the most evil smelling shits in her litter tray.

Still, she does her job in winter of keeping warm any available lap. after an eternity of paddling stomachs, shoving her arse in our faces and dribbling copiously

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/07/2019 16:32

Mine would take the socks to cover their poo in the litter tray.

We went in holiday and got a cat sitter to come in and feed them each day.

2nd day they had opened the kitchen window and escaped.

HippyTrails · 11/07/2019 16:39

I amazed your neighbors don't all get the camera's out when your parading about only wearing your socks OP

Babdoc · 11/07/2019 16:39

DD had to fit a childproof lock on her fridge, after the cat repeatedly opened it to steal chicken breasts and eat them on the floor!
The same cat was kept locked indoors with a neighbour popping in to feed her while DD was on holiday. DD came home to find the cat sitting smugly in the garden. She’d worked out that the plastic knob was the thing that locked her electronic cat flap, so she had carefully chewed it off and dropped it on the floor, so the flap defaulted to its “unlocked both ways” position!

Fortunately my own cat is not so technically minded - but is a fearsome verminator. My kitchen floor resembles an abattoir most mornings...

thecatsthecats · 11/07/2019 16:50

One of our cats will solve any puzzle that involves getting to us for a hug.

It's the only incentive that motivates him. He swan dived into my tea this morning in pursuit of a cuddle.

Tip from the internet: need reminding to do something every day at the same time? Give your cat a treat at that time. You could set your watch by the time my cats get their special cat milk.
