AIBU.

To think that, nobody actually knows what will happen post Brexit, or what our world/ lives will be like.

I'm not political at all, but have tried to read up and understand as much as i can, but as soon as I think I'm getting somewhere the next comment I read completely contradicts and disagrees with what I've seen previously.

So if IABU which I'm happy to admit can somebody give us a quick run down of changes that will happen.

The fact is nobody knows. Lots of people THINK they know and they’ll be along shortly to bring you all the bad news but until it’s happens it’s all speculation.

Chovihano · 10/07/2019 19:29

This is what I'm beginning to believe.
Even the well educated who I would look to for understanding don't seem to know.
But you think someone should know.
I don't think it's realistic to look to what it was like before we joined the EU because lots of things have changed since then and the world isn't the same, irrespective of The EU.

I'm the same as you. I'm not very political, I try not to get involved in conversations involving them. I understand people are genuinely worried. It's divided our country horribly. However, no matter which way you voted, it's awful when people start slinging insults. No one knows 100% what's gonna happen, we've just got to try to middle through whatever.

lljkk · 10/07/2019 19:33

Nobody has a crystal ball.
You can understand the current situation, though, and the rules that apply to make it happen like it does.

Chucking all those rules out is not gonna be good.

CastleCrasher · 10/07/2019 19:34

Noone knows because it's never been done before, we are still not sure how we'll do it (no deal, or if a deal, what deal...) and there are so many unique aspects to our situation (eg Northern Ireland, peace process, Irish border, device administrations, Island nation...). It's a nonsense to compare with the situation before we joined as the world has changed. Likewise it's a nonsense to compare with countries that never joined.

Chovihano · 10/07/2019 19:37

What are device administrations and Island nation? sorry to be ill educated.

"device administrations" I think was a typo for "devolved administrations" meaning we have devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

"Island nation" refers to the fact that the UK has an 'island mentality', tending to want to do things 'our own way' and less inclined towards integration with our neighbours than other countries that just have land borders. (The obvious exception being Ireland who half the time we forget are actually another country, somewhat reinforcing the point).

Well, if we don't leave things remain pretty much as they are now, if we leave with a transition deal things will change slowly - likely for the worse in economic terms but it might be gradual enough for us to adapt or choose a future pathway that minimises any damage.

If we leave with no transition arrangement "no deal" there will be an abrupt change to our trading operations with pretty much every other country in the world. We will lose all trading agreements causing disruption to the import of food, medicines and other goods which will need to have tariffs paid and customs checks made. There has been pretty much zero preparation for this on the UK side so it doesn't take a crystal ball to foresee a disaster.

Either we abide by WTO rules - tariffs will be applied meaning goods cost more and customs checks have to be introduced that mean long delays at ports, or we wave everything through, contravening WTO rules (which won't do much for our international standing) and allowing goods from anywhere in the world to come in unchecked. It wouldn't take long for some unscrupulous groups to see the opportunity for a bit of smuggling or letting in sub-standard or dangerous products knowing they wouldn't be checked.
