AIBU to host a party for 20+ 5 and 6 year old at home?

Average sized semi with garden. I don’t have room in the garden to hire a bouncy castle. Lots of DCs friends have had softplay/hired hall parties.

Would the kids be dissapointed with crafting, cake decorating, taking turns on the trampoline, toys and party games? Its a summer party and we would just be using an open plan kitchen diner, the garden and a covered outside area.

I can offer a good party tea and balloon modelling... we’ve always had parties at home before and its been fine but there are far more kids this time around. Should I just shell out for a soft play party?

We did my 6yo party at home - invited 16, made it clear it was drop off. Dressing up, games, pizza and a cheap disco ball + iPhone playlist for a mini disco at the end. It was fab. Loud, but fab.

I remember more than one of DS's home parties involving rather a lot of Nerf guns, Just Dance and Mario Kart...Grin

Done this once (had that many round plus parents) and never again!

YANBU to host a party at home - it would be lovely with sensible numbers.

YABU to think 20+ is a good number to invite into your home for a party for 5 - 6 yr olds.

I read on here years ago, and am inclined to agree that a good rule of thumb is to invite the number of guests that your dc's birthday is.... so, if they are turning 6, invite 6 guests.

I would not want that many kids wanting a go on a trampoline. I would say art from that it’s fine,

With 20? No way. Your house will be trashed, kids will be trying to get upstairs etc and the clean up will be awful 🙈
I’ve done it with 10 5 year olds and after that thought never again, soft play parties, Pizza Hut, bowling parties after that.

I wouldn't allow my 5 year old round a house if I didn't know the parents well so I'd expect parents. If an invitation said drop off only (which I think is really rude) we would just say no to the invitation. One party we went to the party mum asked another mum (before the party) if she would stay and make teas and coffee and offer biscuits to parents, that worked well as the parents didn't have to think about it.

I guess that's aimed at me - luckily we know and get on well with all the class parents and made it clear it's because we only have a small house with one downstairs room. One parent asked to stay as her daughter was anxious which was fine. The rest were delighted.

The best parties I remember are those at children's houses.
The classic traditional "pass the parcel" and "jelly and ice cream" type parties.
Very rare you get one of those nowadays. In fact I don't think my children have ever been to one. It's all soft play/ trampolining now.
I think the kids will love what you have planned.
