I work in a family run business where the manager is essentially top of the chain.
This morning I went to the doctors for a long overdue appointment for anxiety, depression and stress caused by personal life, financial and work factors. The GP has signed me off for 2 weeks.
I went from the GP to my work to talk to them face to face and give them my sick note and she was beyond sympathetic.

I burst into tears as I began to tell her i'd been signed off as things have built up for just too long. She asked what was causing issues and I didn't really want to tell her so gave vague and general reasons and she just discounted them all and told me I should just be dealing with them especially as i'm new staff! (I'm 4 months in and have already been given a permanent contract mind you.)

AIBU to think she was completely out of order? I've had suicidal thoughts my mental health has been so bad. They also don't pay sick pay so I have had to make the difficult decision to lose pay in order to save my mental health so I haven't exactly taken the piss and done this for a holiday.

YANBU

It's not up to her to decide whether your stress is manageable or not.

I'm going to go against the grain - you should certainly have discussed 'work factors' as mentioned in your OP. How can your employer address these and look after your health and well being if you are not going to give them the opportunity to do so? it is in the employers interests to have a healthy, happy and productive work force. You may well be '4 months in' and have a contract but that is worth diddly squatt until 2 years is up and you get legal full employment rights .

My suggestion would be to emaill her, and lay out your work concerns and ask for the help or support that you need.

The things she told me to just deal with were the work related things.
I worded it that perhaps some of the issues I have may be because i'm feeling vulnerable at the minute and she said that I need to take criticism because i'm new.

Can we help you with the issues you are having? Perhaps give you form of words you can use ?
