To think I should find GF chips in Brighton?

... trip-advisor isn't much help...
I'm looking for a 'nice' dinner place go family of four special dinner.

Coal shed looks too expensive and has some crappy reviews (and some great ones but the crappy ones do sound genuine + recent)

No one answers the phone at SIX though it looks quite nice.

Latino America - nope - already tried.

Just realised Food with Friends is veggie and that's not really the brief...

Can anyone help please?!

Have you looked at The Ivy in the Lanes. Amazing place and Im sure they have GF and vege options....

DelphicOracle · 10/07/2019 14:34

Also Flint House looks great - not been though.... Practically every place Ive been to in Bton over the last 5 yars has V and GF options. Gingermans are good (Ginger Pig - Hove - super accommodating of children and dogs) too

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/07/2019 14:34

If you like Italian then Donatello’s we have always found is good.

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/07/2019 14:36

Donatello’s is very child friendly

kmammamalto · 10/07/2019 14:38

Is there a particular food type you want? Italian, Indian etc. Or just chips?!
Almost all places in Brighton and hove have gluten free options as well as vegan and veggie and other allergy options. But there are sooo many nice places to eat that it would be easier to recommend if we could narrow it down a little bit!

wishingyouluck · 10/07/2019 14:43

Try Terre a Terre .. it's another vegetarian restaurant but caters for lots of different diets too and the food is great (and the drinks). Taken lots of meat eaters there who have loved it!

Ijustwanttoretire · 10/07/2019 14:46

GF chips?? Confused

Mominatrix · 10/07/2019 14:49

Also confused here - why wouldn't chips be GF as they are just fried potatoes?

TurnOffTheTv · 10/07/2019 14:52

Because they are fried with things that contain gluten.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 10/07/2019 14:58

If you google 'gluten-free chips Brighton' quite a lot of options come up... hope it helps.

StCharlotte · 10/07/2019 14:59

Because they are fried with things that contain gluten.

Like what? Cooking oil surely doesn't have gluten?

StormTreader · 10/07/2019 15:02

Like what? Cooking oil surely doesn't have gluten?

If they fry anything breaded in the oil and then fry chips afterwards, the oil will have trace gluten in it from the previously-fried thing.

Ahhh op this is my thread! Smile Some recommendations below:

Cote in Brighton is fabulous. Fresh lovely food for reasonable amount, always buzzing, wonderful staff and a great location.

Mangetout is also fabulous. Independent French bistro with lovely food, give them a call and see, they'll be able to tell you.

If you want fancier, try the restaurant at Drakes, but possibly too fancy for what you had in mind? Glorious food.

VIP pizza on the old steine is an Italian run proper pizza place - you can't book but you won't be waiting more than 10 mins for a table, it's informal and great.

I'd personally avoid the Ivy in the Lanes. The food is nice though no better than any of the above at significantly more ££, and I have mystery dined them twice and twice had terrible service with food coming completely wrong. It's a bit famous for terrible service lol.

TurnOffTheTv · 10/07/2019 15:13

@StCharlotte

Because they don’t just fry chips in there, battered fish/onion rings etc cause cross contamination.

sar302 · 10/07/2019 15:41

No local recommendations, but if you go anywhere that tells you not to worry, because "the heat of the oil kills the gluten", run! And never look back!

Have just recommended on another thread joining the Facebook group "coeliacs eat out too", as you can just search for the area you're in, and everything local that's recommended (and that isn't!) comes up.

MyNameIsRachel · 10/07/2019 15:43

I was a vegan and most chip shop chips were okay due to they fact they usually only do chips in one oil to make them veggie.

I’m from Brighton too

6triesbuttingout · 10/07/2019 16:03

Buddies

Beebeezed · 10/07/2019 16:21

I love the set and 64 degrees but don’t think it’s very child friendly.
Salt room is on the seafront, lovely views.
The grand hotel have a restaurant called GB1 which is nice.
Harbour hotel
The walrus - it’s a pub but has a lovely restaurant upstairs
The ivy in the laines
Casa don carlos is lovely Spanish food with a great atmosphere
SIX is more hove than Brighton but very nice, as is archipelagos (Greek)

Beebeezed · 10/07/2019 16:23

Oh also riddle and Finns, the one along the seafront. You can’t book the one in the laines. It’s seafood, really lovely!

SemperIdem · 10/07/2019 16:27

Think that you’ll be ok in Brighton with the criteria you have, pretty much anywhere!

Re pp’s questioning how chips can’t be GF it’s not just that they’re often cooked in the same oil as other stuff that isn’t GF, often restaurants put flour on the chips to make them look pleasingly “golden and crisp”. It is very common.

MyCatHatesEverybody · 10/07/2019 16:30

Many chips bought by chain pubs and restaurants etc have a very light coating of flour or similar to help keep them crispy. You can never presume chips are gluten free unless it specifically states that they are.

soulrider · 10/07/2019 16:39

I would say that 90% of places that I've been to that have gluten free options don't offer gf chips.

StCharlotte · 11/07/2019 15:59

Regarding GF chips, every day's a school day Grin

Thanks for enlightening me.
