Builder and lack of prep/care

I’m having a new kitchen fitted and today they had to take the old slate floor out to fit the new laminate.

It was obviously a lot tougher than they’d imagined but AIBU to expect they could have hung a dust sheet to prevent the dust getting all through the rest of the house? They had to take the door off the hinges to do the job and made no effort to cover anything or make some kind of barrier. The whole of the downstairs is now covered in dust and they’ve made no attempt to clear up before leaving.

Is this not standard stuff for a builder/kitchen fitter?

Even with a shut door the dust will have travelled. I had an old tile floor removed in my kitchen and even though builder did his best to minimise the dust spread i could still write my name in the dust in my sons attic bedroom!

Don't know about kitchen cutters but When I had a loft conversion they were fab. They had to knock down a wall and they closed all doors and taped them up as well to stop it getting through the seal.

They hoovered up after themselves constantly!

I appreciate there will be some mess, it’s the fact he’s made no effort to contain it or tidy up after himself. Even a shut door would have been an improvement! He’s now overrun by 50% time wise; hopefully he will be finished soon and I can get some cleaning done!

No, I think as you say he has got behind timewise and is not taking sufficient care. My kitchen fitter even swept up outside if he had done any minor joinery work outside. He should have hung a dustsheet but tbh I dont think it would have made that much difference.

I would have a polite word with him because it is going to continue to piss you off and you dont want to fall out with him before he finishes the job. Just say something.

I think it’s a bit late now as he’s finished the ‘heavy duty’ work. Will see what attempt he makes to clean up when he finishes. He ran out of flooring so can’t come back for a couple of days as he needs me to order more. It’s all getting a bit amateurish now!

No that’s not good, sorry for you op it’s inconsiderate. We had a recent building job knocking 2 rooms together and kitchen refurb. I won’t say it was dust free but our builder put up a sheet over the stair opening every day to stop dust getting upstairs and taped the lounge door up. Every day he vacuumed and mopped the dust and dirt before he went home. It was helpful to keep it all to a minimum and I appreciated his care. Maybe you need to have a word.

I’ve asked him for a list of what still needs doing and when he expects to be finished. I don’t want to fall out with him but I wouldn’t use him again or recommend him which is a shame as he came highly recommended by a friend.
