Help me make my DH birthday trip to Cornwall a good one.

Shamelessly posting for traffic.

I lived in Cornwall for 15 years but that was 17 years ago. Pubs and restaurants change.

We are taking a camper van down there for 10 days to celebrate his 50th ( the Van was an early gift last year and we have hardly used it ).

I remember my favourite places but I want to avoid a trip down memory lane for me and make new memories with DH. Obviously we will end up at the big beauty spots so if anyone knows a good pub / cafe / activity nearby that would be great.

Can any one recommend the not so well know things to do and see?

Would be interested if anyone knows good places to park a camper with a good sea view while we have a coffee.

We are basically hugging the coast from the lizard in an anti clock wise direction to Tintagel.

Thanks.

Enjoy!

Park up somewhere near Crantock for a fab view. All the beaches round there are spectacular.
I love carbis bay, mousehole, fowey, mevagissey, st ives, Falmouth, Heligan.

You're absolutely spoilt for choice in Cornwall. Smile

carlywurly · 09/07/2019 21:57

And if you can get down here soon, the weather is bloody amazing at the moment Grin

StVincent · 09/07/2019 22:01

Wouldn’t anti clockwise direction mean going via Scotland?

RockyRolly · 09/07/2019 22:02

I cant get over how middle class this post is - gifting camper Van's, hugging the coast. I love it.

Any who my favourite place is perranporth beach.

CheddarGorgeous · 09/07/2019 22:03

Coffee with a view from a van:

Maenporth
Lizard Point
Pendennis Point
Sennen
St Agnes (very busy in the summer)

DivisionBelles · 09/07/2019 22:05

The seaview from the YHA at Treyarnon Bay, north coast, between Newquay and Padstow, is a pretty good one. And they do a nice cup of coffee too! Park in the car park and walk about 2 minutes round the cliff path.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 09/07/2019 22:17

A drink in the beer garden at The Bluff Inn in Hayle watching the sunset over Hayle bay

Bliss

Lovingthesunshine88 · 09/07/2019 22:19

Bowgie crantock 100% 🙌🏻

Janleverton · 09/07/2019 22:20

Park at carnevas/bedruthan NT and walk to the cliffs. If tide out, go down, otherwise admire the view. Great cafe there.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/07/2019 22:38

Quite right.... going clock wise Blush

Rocky Rolly..... Channel 4’s Skint was filmed in the town I live. I wasn’t born and raised here but my DH is. But to be fair, I was seen as a bit of a novelty when I moved in with him . Grin

Rocky Rolly, I love Perranporth too. It was my first holiday ever in Cornwall age 18. Has it turned posh like the rest of Cornwall? I hope not.

Food is good at Schooners Trevaunce Bay St Agnes,

Not sure about camper. Van views.

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/07/2019 23:00

Lusty Glaze restaurant. Lots of steps but beautiful.

Sparadrap · 09/07/2019 23:05

Marazion Godolphin Arms overlooking St Michaels Mount.

Logan’s Rock Inn in Treen by Porthcurno. Hike down to Pedn Vounder Beach from there or over the cliffs to Porthcurno.

The Little Wonder Cafe at Cape Cornwall is so lovely.

Porthmeor Beach in St Ives. Park up at the rugby club and get the bus down the hill.

Gwithian sunset surf cafe is lovely with lots of parking. Or further round to

Hope you have fun!

Sparadrap · 09/07/2019 23:08

Ooh one more, the rock pool cafe in Mousehole is gorgeous. There is a car park right by it.

Sparadrap · 09/07/2019 23:12

Should say further round to Godrevy!

CakeNinja · 09/07/2019 23:19

The tinners arms in Zennor is so lovely, there’s a very quaint little church just opposite and a nice coastal walk you can get to from there.
The views from the Bluff is lovely, a PP is right, have a drink there. But don’t eat there, the food is absolute shite Envy
We also really like the old coastguard in mousehole (if you’re that way) and it’s sister pub the gurnards head between st ives and mousehole.
Apologies if these aren’t on your route, after so many Cornish holidays in and around these areas I’ve forgotten which places are where!
Godrevy is great for a van, with a beautiful view. A surfers paradise if you’re that way inclined (I am not).

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 09/07/2019 23:25

I spent my 40th birthday walking around Lizard Point with a massive cream tea at the café by the lighthouse. Was amazing and perfect!! And DH bought me a ring from the random jewellery shop to top things off. We spent the evening on porthminster beach with fish and chips.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/07/2019 23:41

This thread is already a trip down memory lane! Just goes to show my memories are probably worth sharing and re visiting. I love the Coast Guard and Gurnards Head. Sadly, the coast guard has a fire a few weeks ago so I suspect it is shut.
Only went to Bedruthian steps once in my life. Will go again.
My Aunt lives on the Towans near Sunset cafe. Is one of DHs few memories of Cornwall as I would drop him off so he didn’t have to visit her too.
I’m so excited I can’t sleep. Grin

Ah clockwise makes sense! 😊

Sparadrap and CakeNinja have mentioned lots of good ones!!

Praa Sands bar (the sandbar?) is lovely as is the beach.

The Jubilee Pool lido in Penzance has reopened and I think has a cafe/bar as well. Penlee Park has an open air theatre season all summer which is worth checking out.

Newlyn has an independent cinema/bar and a nice Portuguese cafe now, as well as the cracking pizza place and Jelberts ice cream (handily right opposite each other!)

St Just has its festival soon - google Lafrowda! It’s v fun.

I don’t need to tell you about the Minack!

The North Inn at Pendeen has a lovely massive sea view garden and did a cracking Sunday roast last time I went, which admittedly was a while back.

That area is chock full of cool ancient sites as well - hut villages, big tombs, ancient forts etc, some of them are 4000 years old!!

Janleverton · 10/07/2019 05:48

You could go to st merryn and buy fish and chips then drive to Trevose head car park by the lighthouse. Eat chips there looking back over boobys/Constantine/treyarnon. Gorgeous.

fourandahalfkids · 10/07/2019 06:17

If you are visiting st agnes the walk from Wheal Coates to Chapel Porth Beach is a must. Engine houses set on the cliff tops it's one of our favourite places to walk. At Chapel Porth beach cafe they sell (amongst other things) the famous hedgehog ice creams. Well worth a visit, also watching the sunset over the mines at Wheal Coates is stunning.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 10/07/2019 07:12

Thanks guys. I’ll be keeping this thread handy. Smile
