To try to be signed off tomorrow?

My mental health is deteriorating so much and work lately is contributing to how bad it is. There’s subtle bullying, blatant patronisation. My already fragile mental health struggles and I just can’t brush things off my back as easy as others.

I am planning on going to the doctors tomorrow and I feel like begging them to sign me off. What do I say? I honestly need to sort my mind out before I have a break down. I’m so down stressed and depressed

well getting signed off is not really gong to change anything in the long run.

can you speak to your manager/hr about the issues you're having at work

Sparklesocks · 09/07/2019 19:28

speak to the GP about exactly how you are feeling, the effect it’s having on you and how it’s impacting your day to day life. Be honest and explain.

ShirleyPhallus · 09/07/2019 19:28

You probably don’t need to say anything. When I was signed off work, the doctor took one look at me crumbled in tears and just did it

FWIW, my stress was entirely work related and now I’ve left and got a job elsewhere it’s totally cleared

Good luck. It’s hireibke.

ShirleyPhallus · 09/07/2019 19:28

*horrible!

EmeraldRubyShark · 09/07/2019 19:32

I echo PP, that being signed off isn’t going to change your situation. Why not just self certify for a week, give yourself some breathing space and time to make a plan for the way forward (addressing issues at work, finding another job, any other options etc)? I wouldn’t get signed off for multiple weeks as you’ll find you’re just anticipating returning and the longer you leave it the harder it gets to go back.

You need a longer term solution but if a few days off gives you time to think then go for it, you don’t need the GP for that.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/07/2019 19:32

Just be honest. When I talked to my GP is was very obvious how ill I was. Take time to feel stronger and look at how you can change what happens at work.

Sideeye47 · 09/07/2019 19:43

My work doesn’t offer sick pay and self certifying for MH reasons will not be goo enough for them

OP posts:
familycourtq · 09/07/2019 19:47

OP if in UK it’s illegal not to offer sick pay - but perhaps you don’t qualify? They can’t refuse to accept self certification- especially if they aren’t even planning on paying. How long have you worked there?

ReganSomerset · 09/07/2019 19:49

Change jobs ASAP. Signing off with stress may negatively affect that process, so I wouldn't. Could call in with d and v, then job hunt?

TitsInAbsentia · 09/07/2019 20:04

You need to tackle your situation a bit at a time really.

Are you already taking any medication for your MH? If not might be good to get something, and if you are already perhaps a review/increase/change?

You clearly need a new job but you need to be in a good frame of mind to start looking/be interviewed, but just the process of getting your CV sorted, looking at what you'd want to do/what environment you think is right for you is a good start.

I hope you can pick yourself up from this, I've been in a similar situation many times and it's not easy, but you CAN do this Flowers

MT2017 · 09/07/2019 20:20

Will having time off help?

If so, then do it. But if you're just going to feel like you'll be coming back to an equally shite situation in a few weeks, then maybe best to try and sort now Flowers

EmeraldRubyShark · 09/07/2019 20:45

Then surely whether you get signed off by the GP or sign yourself off for one week you won’t be paid either way? Unless you mean lie to the GP to pretend you need signing off for a physical issue?

Your work literally can’t stipulate they ‘accept’ your self certification for a physical health issue but not for a MH issue. That’s illegal. Are you in a Union?

bridgetreilly · 09/07/2019 20:54

OP, yes you should get signed off. You should also talk to the GP about anti-depressants and/or counselling. Your health is important and you need to take it seriously. In the longer term you can think about going back and then decide whether that's the right thing or not.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 09/07/2019 21:00

You can sign yourself off work for one week, after that you would need a GP sick note (they cannot refuse self certification)

Your company may not pay you for the 1st 3 days however you will receive statuary sick pay.

If your on a 0 hour contract, you will get an average payout to the lesser or equals value of SSP.
