AIBU in thinking if you have a Council house and the Council are modernising it you shouldn't really moan about it?!

So I'm in B&M in the queue listening to a customer moan on and on about how the Council have only given her 3 weeks notice that she is getting a new kitchen and bathroom fitted and this is totally unacceptable and how it's going to disrupt her life! Checkout lady then moans that she contacted her Housing Association to find out she's not entitled to a new bathroom for some time yet. AIBU to think some people feel so entitled? What about the people (me) who own their own home and cant currently ever imagine having the money to have a new kitchen and bathroom fitted?! Oh, and the loft was being insulated also!

Our HA insisted on fire doors for safety And removal of items from the communal hallway

Meanwhile in a block in Plymouth a main door was not closing Tenants complained for two years as some local little arseholes were entering the building and trying to start fires. There were a couple of small fires due to these little twats Tenants kept asking for the main door to be fixed. TWO YEARS Then #BarneBartonFire

Im fine with housing associations getting on board with fire safety Im not fine with them being hypocrites though.

HUZZAH212 · 09/07/2019 19:17

Free smoke alarm batteries 😁 They normally wire them into the electrics now so you don't have to fret that she's getting Duracell packs dropped off at the tax payers expense.

TeamUnicorn · 09/07/2019 19:18

Some of you have really poor service, not all HA are like this. They may need to improve in areas but not all of them are as bad as being made out on here.

HelenaDove · 09/07/2019 19:19

If an HA is doing things like insisting tenants remove mats for fire safety but then ignoring tenants when lack of security is enabling little sods to come in and start fires there is a word for it

Tokenism

HelenaDove · 09/07/2019 19:20

I know that Unicorn NAHAALT

TeamUnicorn · 09/07/2019 19:20

The hard wired ones have battery back up and yes HA's will often replace them, you know as part of being a responsible landlord and making sure there are working alarms.

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 09/07/2019 19:22

Yes, that is definitely unacceptable and I hope the council I work at wouldn't be guilty of that.

HelenaDove · 09/07/2019 19:27

Ours goes off when the power comes back on after a power cut

Passthecherrycoke · 09/07/2019 19:28

Everyone’s in a block does that @helenadove

HelenaDove · 09/07/2019 19:31

Yes i know It wasnt a complaint It shows that its working.

WomanLikeMeLM · 09/07/2019 19:32

Not entitled at all OP, what if she has to be home during the works but is not able to get time from work? Its very short notice. Yabu.

Neverbuyretail · 09/07/2019 19:39

Let me tell you how it works:
The council have approved suppliers. Cool
They use these guys on rotation for fairness. Cool.
The budgets the contractors are given by the council is based on tendered prices given. So the cheapest price always win unless you won the last one.
So, now. I'm a contractor. I need to get this job done for far less and with the materials already approved for installation by council. The council will choose what you can and can't have.
The contractors then have to get the job done as fast as possible in order to make a profit. Meaning going from one to the other. However, most contractors are not paid for 90 days and are subject to clauses if not completed, meaning even less profit.
The whole affair between contractor and council becomes a labour of love or a "charity" case client and so guaranteed unless they are dealing with the corrupt ones, that the contractor will refuse to take on work at a loss. So they have to find someone quickly to fill the boots and so quality of work as less time to vet is inevitable.
Try and see it from all perspectives when faced with issues before laying judgement.
And remember beggars are not choosers. Get what ya given my old girl used to say. But Dad used to say "get what ya can son, just don't hurt no one or steal it"
I listened to both sides of the coin and as a result never have to go through what you lot (actually want!) will when the council gives you a free refurbished room at taxpayers expense.
P.s. Someone above (not you big man) please tell me:
A. How much does a kitchen cost?
B. Forget affordability if you can't answer A.

Tip of the day -
"The truth is an almighty weapon, but must be wielded with care or it could hurt someone close to you or yourself. Most effective on enemies and liars.

Passthecherrycoke · 09/07/2019 19:42

@Neverbuyretail you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about, and I say that as someone who has worked housing association and contractor side.

That said it would be interesting to see how much people think a new social housing kitchen costs on average

Prrroff · 09/07/2019 19:43

Never judge a book by it's cover.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/07/2019 19:43

Bloody hell not every HA/Council are the same

Mine come and inspect every two years

They also take pictures of the bathroom/kitchen every year when they do a gas inspection . They also change smoke alarms if needed

HelenaDove · 09/07/2019 19:44

will when the council gives you a free refurbished room at taxpayers expense

Point proven

Its because of these attitudes and the culture that allows it that there will be another Grenfell.

Thank You.................for proving me right.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/07/2019 19:44

Oh and our council don’t use contractors for internal work, they have their own staff

The HA do though and the work is crap

Passthecherrycoke · 09/07/2019 19:45

Agreed @everyflight. The example with clarion and the estate in Plymouth above isn’t even representive of them as a landlord either. The reality is sadly in large organisations things fall through nets (although they shouldn’t) and the media and tenants don’t always report things accurately either

vampirethriller · 09/07/2019 19:54

Council tenants pay taxes too you know.

HelenaDove · 09/07/2019 19:55

Our HA told us to get rid of DHs mobility scooter or they would take it and sell it to cover the cost of taking it/or take it and destroy it depending on whether you belived the tort notice or the letter.

We got a mobility scooter shed which 69 year old DH HAPPILY pays a fee for after i kicked off on social media

And it was due to using SM because AFTERWARDS they continued to do it to other tenants.

From an OPEN blog

Exactly one year after it happened to us.

"I am a disabled tenant have recently came out of hospital after 6 weeks and 6 operations. I had a serious stomach infection and have had half of my stomach taken away basically a great big hole. The week before I went into hospital I stayed in bed all week. I have asbestos in my flat a boiler in my bedroom no natural light or ventilation and are inundated with damp. our whole estate have similar issues. But all sanctuary can be bothered with is that my mobility scooter is in the communal area and it has to be moved otherwise they will remove it. I wouldn’t mind but 2016 I received a letter from my MP who said a ramp had been agreed to be put in. This has never happened exactly a year later a new housing officer came out and said they will put a shed in. 2018 yet another housing officer who has come in laying the law down with I don’t care attitude she actually said she doesn’t care and is using what happened at grenfall towers as an excuse. The housing options team have said it’s the housing association who is to provide me with what I need. But of course that’s not what sanctuary are saying they are saying I have to move it to a friend’s or family to store it. I outlined it’s against my human rights I have been housebound for the last two years and after 6 weeks in hospital and 6 operations who will need it to get out and about but no not according to housing officer a much younger person I pray that she ends up with the bad luck I have had when she is older and she gets pushed around the system. I worked in the system for years as a social worker and have seen how it works. I’m actually disgusted being on the receiving end."

I live in a HA house. Desperately need a new kitchen. It’s so depressing ☹️ I’d love to be able to afford to put our own in. I’d love to be able to afford to buy a house. We pay our rent so why shouldn’t we be able to moan about things?

We worry we are going to be badly let down by the Green Paper, he adds.

Says ministers have told him fears of HA debt going on to the national balance sheet is among the reasons there hasn't been progress on a new regulator
