DIY noise

How late is acceptable? My fairly new neighbours don't work (retired) so are home all day. They've started drilling and hammering on a shared wall (which is the wall onto both my living room and bedroom) and they're still going with the hammering and banging increasing
I want to sleep 😴 as I'm up at 5.30 for work! But it's properly vibrating through the walls

I think typically 7pm is deemed to be the time after which you shouldn't do diy that would disturb your neighbours, have you tried looking on your local authorities website to see what info they have re noise x

Are you sure they’re not ‘at it’?

I know what some of these retired folk can be like. Devil makes work etc..

YesQueen · 08/07/2019 20:35

Oh it's definitely DIY. I can hear them drilling into the shared wall. Visions of coronation street style collapsing shared wall soon Blush

My council’s policy is that noisy work should only take place between 8am and 6pm though I think different councils have different rules. Shouldn’t really need rules though, they just need to act considerately and drilling and hammering at this time of day is not on unless it’s some kind of emergency. Have you spoken to them about it?Being retired is irrelevant though and if you’re implying that they should limit any such work to when you’re not at home because as retirees they have nothing else better to do all day then YABU!

Have you met the neighbours yet? I only ask as you say they’re new. Could you pop and explain that you have work very early so would like an early night? Easy for me to say, I know but if they seem like decent people, it could be worth it.

YesQueen · 08/07/2019 20:50

@watchmefly not really, I'm just thinking they could have done the noisy work in more sociable hours? Especially on a shared wall, it would make sense
Seems a bit daft to start at 7.30pm

As I said @YesQueen, anything much after 6pm and especially anything so noisy is unreasonable. The fact that the neighbours are retired is irrelevant.

YesQueen · 08/07/2019 22:21

@watchmefly the only reason I mentioned it is because I was sure I was going to get people saying well maybe they're at work and that's the only time they can do it and I do DIY in the evenings.. etc Grin I have been on here way too long

Still awake, I can hear some noise but it's down a lot

Being retired doesn’t mean they don’t have other commitments during the day. Nevertheless, noisy late evening work is not acceptable. Maybe speak to them about it?
