To think automatic car insurance renewal is an utter scam?

I understand the reason for automatic renewal, but why do some insurers make it such HARD WORK to stop the policy renewing?

I'm sick of having to wait on hold endlessly, getting no replies to emails or "live chat" and then being made to wait another 20 minutes if I do get through on the phone while they "check details" and keep coming back demanding my driving licence number, running through all my details, asking me to tell them what's on my policy and asking about competitors' quotes to see if they can offer a lower price. (But still not as low as their own quote on a comparison site...)

Obviously they're making it as hard as possible so that people give up and just renew, at the offensively inflated "renewal" price. But how is this acceptable? Can anyone recommend an insurer that makes the process simple?

FFS.

I've never had a problem. Find it quick and easy.

If you have insurance with a broker it’s a much easier process rather than going direct.

My car renewal was only 5 more than last year and cheaper than elsewhere. Same with house. Its the first year this has happened though.

I went with my auto renew this year as it was the cheapest I could find. In the past I’ve called up to cancel the automatic renew and been all prepared for them to ask about other quotes and offer me a better deal but they didn’t. They just said ok thanks that’s it cancelled.

YANBU. I've been driving for 25 years, never had an accident and every year they try to bump up the premiums. This year by 30%. And the only way to cancel is by phone. I end up switching insurers every year, ended up getting a policy that was cheaper than the previous years, about 40% less than my original insurer wanted. They rely on people not bothering with the hassle of changing, much like the utility companies and I'm sure it works a lot of the time.
