AIBU to think this is excessive

Whenever we go on holiday as a family OH tends to have a pint or two before dinner, then after dinner around 4 pints then he drinks after I've gone to bed, another 1-2 pints. So could come to around 8 pints per evening. I think this is excessive. He disagrees, saying he doesn't drink during the day like some others do on holiday. I just feel this is an awful lot and it's not like he's on a lads' holiday - I don't see why he needs to drink so much on a family holiday. AIBU?

What's your issue? If he's not Lairy. His behavuour doesn't change, why are you trying to control what he does like this?

starzig · 08/07/2019 18:37

He's on holiday. Give him a break. Have a wee voddy and calm down.

Amibeingdaft81 · 08/07/2019 18:41

That is a LOT

But the real question is - what is he like when drinking? And what’s he like the next day. If the answers to either of these is negative, then it’s a problem that you need to address.

Wolfiefan · 08/07/2019 18:43

I can’t believe some people think drinking like this every night on holiday is ok. It’s a huge binge

RandomMess · 08/07/2019 18:52

You are actually describing behaviour that means he is alcohol dependent, he drinks every day when not on holiday and then just even more each day whilst you're away. Functioning alcoholics don't need to be drinking lots every day, it's far more about their dependency on alcohol etc.

8 pints a day is very excessive, his poor liver Sad

Imoen · 08/07/2019 18:52

That’s not a huge hinge on holiday.

We’ve just come back off a cruise and I can honestly say we started drinking large drinks (about two an hour and they were double
Doubles) spirits about noon - continued until nap time around six. Plenty of wine with dinner and post dinner into the bars until midnight - again drinking large doubles.

If we were on land then the only difference was the drinking didn’t start until around 4pm and there was no nap time.

And I’d guess there were about 3000 others doing exactly the same!

mamaofboyzz · 08/07/2019 18:54

@Funkyslippers mine is exactly the same and I get annoyed too! I don't understand why after the evening has come to an end and the company they carry on drinking alone. One of those things that I will probably never understand

dontdoxmeeither · 08/07/2019 19:02

I think that amount is fine on holiday It's probably less than what DH would drink (on holiday) as he'll have a beer with lunch, another sometime in afternoon. Either way he's not lairy/unpleasant. I probably have slightly less (wine, tequila, odd beer)

starzig · 08/07/2019 19:03

At festivals I typically drink 8pts a day. Don't drink every day at home, only drink once a week/fortnight depending on work.

UpToTheRigs · 08/07/2019 19:15

8 pints of beer is between 16 and 24 units depending on strength of the beer. A bottle of wine is 8 units so that's the same as 2 or 3 bottles of wine, not one as a previous poster suggested.

The recommended limit per week is 14 units. If your dh is drinking like that every night that could be 168 units over one week of the holiday, over 10 times the recommended safe limit. I would be very worried indeed if my dh was drinking this amount.

UpToTheRigs · 08/07/2019 19:18

And previous posters are right to be worried about him driving - alcohol leaves the body at the rate of one unit per hour from the time you STOP drinking. So if he's up drinking til midnight and he's had 8 pints of average strength lager, he'll still have alcohol in his bloodstream until 4 pm the next day. He'd be over the limit for driving well into the afternoon, and for longer if he drinks stronger lager or stays up later than midnight to drink.

Imoen · 08/07/2019 19:22

It takes an hour per unit from when you start. They tell you to count from when you stop to be on the safe side.

sleepwhenidie · 08/07/2019 19:26

My drink tracker app makes 8 pints of beer 27 units Shock (and 3x250ml wine 9 units).

I have to agree, it is excessive and more concerning is the fact that he must be drinking a lot when not on holiday in order to have any tolerance for that amount of alcohol...and it sounds like his tolerance is high Sad

UpToTheRigs · 08/07/2019 19:40

OK Imoen, this was what I was told by an alcohol counsellor (seems strange they would give out incorrect information?)

If it's 16 units and he starts at 6 pm he'd be affected until 10 am the next day if your information is correct. If 24 units he'd still have alcohol in his bloodstream until 6 pm the next day, just in time to start drinking again. He'd basically be under the influence the entire holiday.

IncrediblySadToo · 08/07/2019 19:46

Do what if it’s ‘in front of you & the kifs’ It’s drinking beer not ranking off to porn

Lighten up fgs

It’s wuite a volume, I couldn’t do that in water let alone beer, but he’s nit obnoxious and you ‘can’t tell the dufference you just think he shouldn’t because you don’t and that’s ridiculous He’s an individual adult he doesn’t need to do what you do(or don’t do)

Wolfiefan · 08/07/2019 19:53

I’m stunned by the people who think it’s alright to drink like this. No wonder the NHS is on its knees. Have a few drinks on holiday? Fine. Go over the NHS limits a bit? If you like.
Drink heavily every day of the holiday? Bad for your health. Not great for the family and pretty shit on the wallet too.

ChikiTIKI · 08/07/2019 20:27

Does it not make him sick? Or at least feel absolutely awful?
Maybe I am boring but I wouldn't want to spend most of my holiday feeling like that. I wouldn't be impressed if I was on holiday with someone, trying to spend time with them and enjoy their company, and they were doing that!

MissLadyM · 08/07/2019 20:30

7 pints is not equal to a bottle of wine!!!!

starzig · 08/07/2019 20:54

From my fridge. Bottle of malbec 9.8 units. Bottle of green wine 7.5 units. Can of Strongbow (440ml) 2.2 units. So about 22/23 units in 8 pints = 3 bottles Vinho Verde.

Travis1 · 08/07/2019 20:59

I couldn’t get worked up about this tbh. I’m not long back from 2 weeks in Turkey and we generally had our first drink around 12/1 o’clock and would drink most of the day on and off. Never pissed or making a fool of ourselves.

There were also 2 days where we went on a boat trip so my first vodka slush was before 11am 🙈

I’d say as long as he’s not making an arse of himself or too hungover to participate in family stuff then it’s not the end of the world.

skybluee · 08/07/2019 21:48

If it's just for one week on holiday it wouldn't bother me but what you said about him drinking a lot at home bothers me more.
