To agree with Stella McCartney that we don't need to wash our clothes so often

And the experts on Jeremy Vine (R2) agree with her.
And so does some bloke who sells Levis.

I know MN loves excessive laundering but apparently it's better for our clothes and the planet to wash them less.

I think I'm a right dirty Nelly but I think I'm washer woman of the year compared to some postersshock

Only washing jeans once a year?!shock

Me: :-). Hell's Angels used to wear jeans until they walked off on their own, complete with oil, curry, beer and anything else. They called them their 'originals', it was a point of honour to have a pair of originals for years. I know I'm a mine of useless information but used to read a lot and knew a Hell's Angel once - he also got married over the motor cycle manual wearing his originals. Nice chap, interesting.

Knickers/underpants - one day only. Everything else depends on if it smells or if it looks dirty.
I used to be the washing queen, I was actually obsessed with washing and ironing, but even I have cut back now. And if you have a garden, balcony, or any outdoor space, then use it. Sunlight and fresh air are free and do a pretty good job of cleaning clothes, even in the winter.

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 08/07/2019 18:15

I do sniff test.
And if it doesn't need washing but just refreshing I hang it by the window or outside and spray it a bit with water/softener solution.
Like new😁 No need to wash things too often. I think it's even better for the clothes

I don't think you should expect any kind of kudos for not washing dresses or blouses after every wear

And I don't think you should expect any kudos for unnecessarily washing dresses or blouses after wearing an hour or two. Unless of course you are exceptionally sweaty, which I am not. I never have wet patches under my arms even in hot weather.

For instance, I wore a very loose fitting untucked blouse today for about 3 hours. It does not smell, it is just as fresh as when I put it on. I put it back in the wardrobe.

Do you honestly think that everyone washes everything that touches their body? They don't. As this thread illustrates.

As PP has said, it's normal

Who says? It's not normal to me. And others.

Everything gets washed after one use in my house feels dirty otherwise

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 08/07/2019 19:31

My feet are not stinky so if I've had a shower in the afternoon (often happens here due to my work patterns) and put fresh socks on, and they pass the sniff test the following morning - then I'll wear 'em again! No shame here.

Shame on anyone who washes everything after one wear or one use. I agree with Stella.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 08/07/2019 19:41

Normally, I'd agree but I currently have a toddler and a newborn so end up with all manners of bodily fluids by the end of the day so most of my clothes need washing every day!

tillytoodles1 · 08/07/2019 19:45

I only wear tops once, twice maximum as I'm messy and usually spill something on them. Bras two or three time and clean knickers every day. Trousers, jean etc usually pass the sniff test for another couple of wears. I shower at least once a day and use panty liners.

groundanchochillipowder · 08/07/2019 19:51

I'm going through menopause and sweat like a pig and pong. I wash it all after one use. I pay the bills round here, not Stella, so she can go get knotted. I have yet to find a deodorant that actually works against my smelly pits and yes, I use DriColor.

SnugglySnerd · 08/07/2019 20:12

Toddler clothes tend to get done after each wear because they always have food, mud and goodness know what else all down them.
School uniform is closely inspected on arrival home and if it passes my test it is reworn the next day.
Dh has a sweaty commute on trains and involving a long walk at either end so his shirts go in the wash after one wear as do all our socks and pants.
Everything else can last longer and I try to reduce laundry as much as possible.

Oh good, the Levi CEO is like me!

I haven't bought a new pair of jeans in about 5 years but I haven't washed any in the last 5 years either! Denim doesn't really need it, IMO.

T-shirts I wear multiple times unless I sweat in them. Jumpers and other tops, wash just every now and then I guess, certainly less often than every 5 wears.

Yeah the only thing I wash after one use is underwear.
