Many years ago we wer on holiday in Spain. I was a UK size 16 and saw a lovely pj set.
I told the lady my size and she produced a set on a dark colour. My mum asked if they had any other colours and she was told that this was the only colour in such a big size. I purchased set.
Cue years later and my wright has yo yoed but I am now mu lowest in 15 years. Tjis set had come down from the wardrobe and fits. Wrll maybe a little big. I should be happy but all I can remember is that conversation.
So is a size 16 really that huge?

In Spain it was a big size. I remember clothes shopping in Marbella about 16/17 years ago. My friend asked did they have a top she was looking at in the equivalent of a size 14. The lady was horrified, said she didn’t stock large sizes. It is not a reflection on you, it was just the shop you were in. If you like the pjs wear them, if they upset you, get rid.

EssentialHummus · 08/07/2019 08:04

Well done on your weight loss OP. 16 is large imo, but a) as I'm sure you know sizing varies from store to store /over time and b) height makes a difference. (And c) giving so much credence to the language skills of a random Spanish shopping assistant 10 years ago isn't the best idea.)

And this:

Get rid of the pjs. There’s no good memories attached to them. You don’t want to replay that one conversation every single time you wear them. Find a nice photo of you and your mum on that same holiday and remember that instead.

Size 16 is big but not huge. However a large percentage of UK woman are now overweight so a size 16 is seen as normal. I am surprised a size 10/12 is normal for woman in there 20s as most I know are at least a size 16.

The Spanish woman seem to generally be slimmer but they have a better diet and lots of outdoor activities due to weather.

In saying all that some woman can be a size 16 and look amazing especially tall woman. I am 5ft 5 and small framed so start to look a bit chubby at any size more than a 10.

I’m a size 16 and we spend a lot of time in Spain, over there that is a pretty big size to be fair and I can’t shop in a lot of places
If you think that’s bad try shopping in Hong Kong, that was pretty traumatic “ no lady, you too fat for our clothes “ before I even got in the door!

transformandriseup · 08/07/2019 08:30

I was a size 16 on both my top and bottom but after a trip to Nepal where I realised I was actually quite unfit and then squeezing myself into a very pretty size 14 top as there weren’t any bigger sizes I started to change what I ate and now the top fits fine.

I’m 5ft7 and size 16 was when I began to lose my curvy shape and just look rounded so for me it was quite big but not massive. I’m probably a 12/14 on top now and 14/16 on the bottom which is my natural pear shape although I could do with loosing half a stone to bring me back to a healthy weight.

I’d keep the PJ’s if it helps to remember the good times with your mum, plus it’s great to be able to fit in to something you used to be able to wear from years ago.

HappyNOTdriving · 08/07/2019 08:42

I'm 5'7" and a 16 makes me fatter than I want to be by about 2-3 stone normally but not so big that others always think she's getting really big (again!) my old 16's though are smaller than the size 16's I bought a couple of months ago!

Look Iv learnt the hard way that you need to step back from your brain and be honest but caring about the issue. You have worked your arse off if your bmi 40 is any indication!
Throw the pj's and focus on a goal for yourself and treat yourself like you would a child or friend you love had already put in all that hard work.

fuck those pj's op, fuck them right off

timeforakinderworld · 08/07/2019 08:44

Over half of the women in the UK are overweight or obese so if 16 is the UK average then it is obviously a big size! Sounds like you have done really well though OP so don't beat yourself up about it- and throw out the pjs if the make you feel bad !

RockinHippy · 08/07/2019 08:46

Honestly forget about it. Holiday resort sizing can be ludicrous. We once had our luggage lost & arrived at our holiday with absolutely nothing but what were we're stood up in. I tried to buy holiday clothes at the resort & there wasn't a single thing that would even come close to fitting me & most would have fit DD who was 6 at the times - I'm an average height 10/12. I'm not sat here now feeling fat because some sap running a business in a holiday resort doesn't know there target market 🤷‍♀️

RockinHippy · 08/07/2019 08:47

Excuse shite grammar, not sure if it's autocorrect or my fingers that have a mind of their own ATM 😐

Northernsoulgirl45 · 08/07/2019 09:07

I know I am still overweight ( no longer obese) but I was really enjoying trying on clothes that no longer fitted.
Not sure why that comment took the shine off this.
Just under 2 stone to go to get into healthy range so I should be so pleased and I am .

I was in Spain once and tried on a jacket the assistant got me a size 16, i was a size 12 in UK sizing at the time, I wondered if Spanish sizing is smaller.

Lovemusic33 · 08/07/2019 09:22

For me a size 16 is huge, I feel big at a size 12 and could never allow myself to get to a 16 (it would effect my mental and physical health). I am pretty short so would look massive at a size 16. If your really tall then a 16 would not look as big, it depends on your height and where you carry the weight.

wheresmymojo · 08/07/2019 09:40

I loved being a size 16 - I've been everything from a size 8 to a size 24 and if I could choose any size I'd be a 14-16.

These are some cropped photos of me as a size 16 (5'6") and while I'm clearly not slim I think I looked pretty decent if I do say so myself, trying to get back to this again!

HappyNOTdriving · 08/07/2019 09:43

I don't see any photos wheresmymojo

Pinkgin22 · 08/07/2019 09:43

It’s just Spain op, they are much slimmer there. Even school lunches- anything like crisps or biscuits or a cupcake in their packed lunch would get a letter home. They’re just far healthier.

wheresmymojo · 08/07/2019 09:46

Oh...I see them on my app...it won't let me upload them again as it says I've exceeded six images today (though not sure how as these are the only ones I've posted) Confused

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 08/07/2019 09:56

Don’t beat yourself up over that old comment !! Sizing is pretty meaningless (within reason). What matters is your BMI / height, your fitness and how you feel. Sounds like you would like to get a little fitter from your posts and that you’re trying hard so well done and keep going :-) xxxxx

Hithere12 · 08/07/2019 11:16

I’m a size 12/14 5ft 6 and definitely feel I could lose two stone

Hithere12 · 08/07/2019 11:16

*could do with losing two stone

HappyNOTdriving · 08/07/2019 12:22

Sorry see them now. I like the picture of you in the purple dress you look very pretty where.
