I sold an expensive item on eBay, an upgraded iPhone that I didn't want to change so I kept mine and sold the new one. First winning bidder didn't pay and stated they didn't want if I couldn't get it to them abroad within 24 hours! I relisted, winning bidder paid, then sent me a message saying they didn't realise the phone was locked to a network as they had not read the listing! Where do I stand with this if they decide they want their money back? It was listed as locked.

eBay normal sides with buyers unfortunately.
Have you sent it yet? If not just refund them, I know you shouldn’t have to but that’s better than sending it off and then they open a case and then get refunded and the phone.

Nothing you can do apart from ticking the box to say buyer cancelled sale. You'll then get your fees back and not be charged. The buyer needs to also say they have cancelled the sale.

Then realist it.

Use the eBay promotion for £1 max selling fees and save some money doing this. I think it's on at the moment.

Also state in capitals in the title that it is locked in. People just do not read descriptions.

Isn't it easy to get in unlocked? You just phone the network provider and give them the number and they unblock? At least that's what we've done the last 10+ times we've sold our old phones?

TangfasticFanatic · 08/07/2019 00:22

Thank you for your replies,so far they've not asked for the money back.. just asked if I can unlock it? Can I? It's new and sealed but locked a network as it was sent as part of a contract.

OP posts:
purpleboy · 08/07/2019 00:24

Yes contact your network provider

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 08/07/2019 00:24

I definitely wouldn't open it up. What if you open it and they change their minds? You then have to sell a phone that's been opened and possibly used.

I'd personally tell them it's easy to unlock, maybe send them a link on how to do it and then give them a choice. They can either cancel and you relist or you send it to them.

TangfasticFanatic · 08/07/2019 00:24

I'm not sure @purpleboy as it's new and linked to a contract, I looked quickly and read it has to be used for a period of time before they'll unlock it at at least 3 bills paid I think.. so 3 months.

OP posts:
TangfasticFanatic · 08/07/2019 00:26

I'm not all that sure though as it's not something I've ever done before

OP posts:
hmga90 · 08/07/2019 00:28

Just be careful OP. Usually in the terms of your contract it specially says that your network own the phone for 12 months and you cannot sell it to a third party in that period.

Highly doubtful something will go wrong but if it did then you could find yourself having to fork out money you don’t want to.

TangfasticFanatic · 08/07/2019 00:29

@WhenISnappedAndFarted I'm not keen on opening it either, I might attempt to get it unlocked online as it seems to be able to be done that way.. then send them the code or instructions that way.

How much are you paying on monthly bill now for upgrade? Could you have gone sim only? I did with unlimited calls texts and 4g data £10 a month and kept old phone.

PawsForPizza · 08/07/2019 00:48

eBay do not normally ‘side with the buyer’. This is rubbish.

eBay have BUYER and SELLER protection. It’s what you pay your fees for.

What happens is they need to open an ‘item not as described’ case, you reply with your side of the story and then ask eBay to step in. Their way of handling it is to refund the buyer and let you keep your money.

That said...selling an iPhone on eBay is usually to a scammer and this stinks of a scam to me. Make sure you use that seller protection here. You can live chat eBay and ask for their help.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 08/07/2019 01:27

Don't tell the buyer to open an item not as described case. The item is as described.
The buyer has not received the phone so tell the buyer you cannot/will not unlock it and you are willing to cancel the sale and refund.
If you send the phone and the buyer messes around with it and can't unlock it they send it back and you will have to refund anyway and you'll have an opened phone which may potentially be scratched etc.
Just cancel the sale and sell it someone else.

TangfasticFanatic · 08/07/2019 18:56

eBay live chat want me to unlock it and then send it, despite me listing it as locked to a network.

No ignore that advice from eBay. It's listed as locked and that's what he will get, message the buyer say it is locked and you are not unlocking it. If he does not want this item you will cancel and refund happily.

Biker47 · 09/07/2019 15:15

I wouldn't even dare send a phone or similar tech on ebay, cash on collection only for stuff like that.
