Ok so, film is about some college guys who invent a dating ap. I thought 'hey, this'll be some light, fun filled viewing that doesn't need to be taken too seriously'. Man was I wrong.

So the app basically states that women aren't allowed to ask for the mans name ect,,,and have to advertise themselves via naked underwear shots. And every woman in this movie seems cool with that (with the exception of the stertiotypical 'good/shy/sexually repressed girl' - boke).

All the young college girls are portrayed as stupid bimbos (and all the men, portrayed as being cool with treating them as such) ...I don't know why I thought it would get better but I watched on...almost in the hope that it would somehow find a way to undo the horror.

But no, instead, the very guy who invented the ap, comes to 'save the women from themselves' by telling them 'hey you don't have to be sex objects', and hiving it 'hey how about I make an ap for you' (by this point I am literally screaming at the screen 'eh how about NO you fucking sanctimonious prick!' xD)

A particularly uncomfortable scene happens when one of the girls (who the film made great efforts to portray as stupid and loose earlier scene) meets a creepy guy on her 'date' and comes back crying and all the guys eves drop are making it seem like its a case of it being like 'oh boohoo emotional women waaaah' and laughing. And the implication being made due to the placement of the prior scene was that we were supposed to come to the conclusion that it somehow 'served her right' too.

I mean it's sick, totally sick and I can't understand why Netflix would allow it. Infact it scares me that not one person in the making or casting of this film didn't say 'hey, this isn't ok'. The way we are portraying women in this isn't ok'.

Anyway, sorry for the rant just wondered if anyone else caught some of it and had similar feelings.

Sounds like a alternative version of Love Island to me.

But degrading of both sexes is fun because it's entertaining to some people.

JAMMFYesPlease · 07/07/2019 18:25

but is it possible for you to complain to them strongly about how awful it is,

Netflix wouldn't care. People have complained about 13 Reasons Why and Insatiable and both were quickly renewed. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie got a sequel of some sort if there's enough noise, good or bad.

No it’s not like Love Island really I think with Love Island the people know and have chosen what they are going into, this film was purely about manipulating girls by making an app where you can meet someone and shag them but they can’t contact you again afterwards.

It was a while ago I watched it but it’s just a rip off of Social Network in many ways and Bad Neighbour

The guys aren’t degraded in it from what I can remember, I think the Noah character does seem to be sorry in the end becssue his mum starts using the app and he has some sort of back track but it’s just really awful how the girls are talked about. It’s not funny at all.

I haven't checked this out, but I have read in a couple of places that Netflix come up with their ideas for making films / series by running data provided by Google and other sources through various algorithims. So it's no longer a bunch of writers or programme makers pitching ideas and coming up with scripts etc: it's more a case of looking at what search terms are coming up most frequently, looking at what the data throws up as the topics / themes / storylines that people are most likely to watch - and then producing the content that fits. So it's the video equivalent of clickbait if this is true. And it would explain why they make the occasional clanger.

Jamfy Good! I hope you read them the riot act!

GarakIsMySweetheart You are right of course that this underlying objectification and belittling of women is rife throughout much movie culture. However...this film...I mean it was just on a whole other level.

Pookiedo - I think the Noah character does seem to be sorry in the end - here's the thing though from the START he knew what he was doing was wrong, he even asked to remain anonymous as the creator of the app because what other people (and his mum) would think of him. So there is no redemption for the character as far as I'm concerned. But we're expected to forgive the poor hard done by 'nice guy' who learned his lesson because he isn't 'as bad' as the other lead dickhead and did the right thing in the end - pfffffffffffft.

I doubt Netflix would care a jot about complaints sadly.

it’s just really awful how the girls are talked about Yup, and the failure of the other men to call them out on it. Think the link you posted is pretty spot on calling it glorifying rape culture.

Feel like it hit every awful cliché in the book.
A 'nice guy' (who, isn't), a woman who is 'prudish/shy' (or whatever other cliche) because she isn't a sex crazed vapid headcase like ALL the other girls (who apparently need a man to save them from themselves) a nasty male lead who no one stands up to when he treats women like crap...mostly because all the other men are also too busy treating women like crap. Objectifying women and glorifying rape culture. Did I miss anything else out...probably. Just a horrible film.

That sounds utterly shite! I will find it on Netflix and give it a thumbs down. Maybe we all should Grin

TeaForTheWin · 07/07/2019 20:27

Good shout! Pity they did away with their rating system.
