To ask if some shop bought hair colouring kits are better than salon ones?

I alternate between having my hair coloured at the salon and sometimes colouring it myself in between a cut and colour. I use a well known brand (not sure if I'm allowed to mention it or not on here!) and my hair always looks and feels better than the salon colour for a fraction of the cost! Furthermore I often get lots of compliments about the shine etc when I colour it myself in comparison to when I have it done professionally so to speak. I'm thinking of just having my hair trimmed /cut every 6 - 8 weeks which I do anyway and just start colouring my hair at home permanently and save quite a bit of cash 💰 in the process! Does anyone on here do this and do you find the colour builds up over time to look harsh? I'm sure my salon has dumbed down their colouring products over the years to some cheaper version but still charging the same price though 😉

I find the salon ones look better. Probably because they take more care putting it on, whereas I just slap it all over place.

But it’s £45 cheaper, so I tend to do it at home.

Stripes100 · 06/07/2019 15:00

I would say if your home box dye looks better than your salon hair colour you need to change salons!

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 06/07/2019 15:21

Depends what you are after. Personally I find the Superdrug own brand (Colour Effects) wash-in/wash-out colour shampoos do the job. Even my hairdresser compliments me on the colour and shine and tells me how much I have saved - they are about £1.50 a bottle. I use it twice a week and it lasts me ages and ages. There is one range for brown hair and one range for blonde.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/07/2019 15:23

I use the Superdrug stuff too and love it

YouJustDoYou · 06/07/2019 15:27

Oh, so do those ones actually wash out with one wash? Or last a couple?

Butterfly98 · 06/07/2019 15:42

I use Garnier Belle Colour in Light Auburn, I don't have much grey so it does the job. Even my hairdresser commented on how soft and shiny my hair was and asked me what colour product I used!

@ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow and @IHaveBrilloHair - does the Superdrug stuff cover grey? And how long does it last?

jane1956 · 06/07/2019 17:11

Schwarzkopf £2 from home bargains brill no conditioner but just use my own.

Whydotheycallyoured · 06/07/2019 17:16

I use Nice & Easy. Always a better colour and shine than any salon effort I've ever had and much cheaper! Most people can't believe it's not my natural colour, my hairdresser included. Going grey now though so needs more frequent application.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/07/2019 01:26

The Superdrug colour shampoo is literally wash in, wash out, if you use it that way.
You can use it as your only shampoo and build up the colour, but I use it every 5 days or so, and leave it on for an hour.
I've not tried to get it out so I'm not sure how long it would take, it would depend on your natural colour, and the shampoo colour too.
It really just stains your hair so the greys are still there, but it blends them out and makes them much less noticeable.
It's also very conditioning and leaves your hair very shiny.

FFS, I'm contacting Superdrug to see if they'll pay me for raving about itGrin

Gingerkittykat · 07/07/2019 02:43

Another vote for the Superdrug colour shampoos, like the old Shaders and Toners range just leaves a hint of colour and loads of shine.

I've occasionally bought Garnier boxes and been happy with the results too.

Butterfly98 · 07/07/2019 09:57

@IHaveBrilloHair do you work in advertising / PR by any chance because if you don't you definitely should as that's a great advert for Superdrug shampoo! From what you've written I'm off to Superdrug later to buy that Grin

If you prefer it and it looks fab, use it!

I often buy what my hairdresser uses through Sally, mix it and use it at home. More expensive than a box but cheaper than hairdressers!

Redcrayons · 07/07/2019 10:02

And me. Just writing my shopping list for the week and put ‘go to Superdrug’ on it

It’s cheap enough, so worth a punt.

Tanfastic · 07/07/2019 10:12

I used to get my hair coloured all the time at the hairdressers, various different salons from cheap to expensive. All the same to be honest, never that impressed so I started doing it myself at a fraction of the cost since I'm now very grey and my budget is low and I need to dye roots at least every four or five weeks.

I tend to dye my roots dark blonde and once in a while use a blonde streaking kit. I'm always getting compliments on the colour and nobody as far as I'm aware can tell. Saves me ££££

I use the superdrug one too! I have fading ginger hair and it just brightens it up a little and does fade the white hair that's appearing!! Does leave your hair shiny too

SuziGeo · 07/07/2019 11:22

If u use permanent shop bought colour the problem can be the build up over time. For me the initial quality/shine was good but have just started going back to salon after a couple of years of home dying because my hair was getting brittle. Also the end were so much darker compared to roots (accumulation of the colour). So now back at the salon. The coverage is better but the cost is high and I don't think I cna sustain it long term. Probably get my hair back to an even colour and good condition and go back to shop bought.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 07/07/2019 11:30

OP I agree. Any salon colour is gone within weeks. I now use a colour conditioner once a week and the colour and shine is consistently beautiful, at a tiny fraction of the price. (The conditioner is £4 a bottle and I get four uses out of it)

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/07/2019 11:47

Ha, Superdrug should bloody pay me!
Honestly though, at £1.50 for a good few uses there's nothing to lose, and if you don't like the colour, the conditioning and shine can't be beaten for the price.

Now, where did I put Mr Superdrug's number. ...
