Reparation is a terrible idea, for a multitude of reasons.

OralBElectricToothbrush · 06/07/2019 03:14

I want respiration! Humans for respiration! Abolish the photosynthesis party!

Screamanger · 06/07/2019 03:49

It’s a crap idea, but in the unlikely event it does happen the Democratic Party should foot the bill. I would not be happy for my taxes to go towards it.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 06/07/2019 03:54

Another problem is who exactly would pay the reparations?

If a person's ancestors came over in the late 19th/early 20th century as dirt-poor Irish/Polish/Italian labourers after slavery was abolished, should their descendants contribute towards reparations? What about Asian Americans or African Americans who've emigrated to the US? Their ancestors didn't hold slaves either.

It's just too complicated at this point. It would've made most sense if the Southern slave states had paid reparations to former slaves right after the abolition of slavery.

The museum of slavery in Liverpool shows how the trade worked. I think you could benefit from a visit.

Birdie6 · 06/07/2019 04:38

You know that there was slavery before America ?

LadyRannaldini · 06/07/2019 07:40

Britain profited hugely from the slave trade as did other major players

I know it's considered pc, trendy and right-on to criticise Britain for everything but the majority of the slave trade existed because members of their own community were willing to trade their own citizens.
At some point there has to be a line drawn, can we claim from France for the Battle of Hastings?

Ellisandra · 06/07/2019 09:09

@AmICrazyorWhat2 plenty of Africans were involved in the slave trade, actually. So an African American who voluntarily came to the USA after the abolition of slavery could well have ancestors who were slave traders.

The British did capture and enslave people, but far more people were sold to them by local tribal chiefs who would raid other tribes.

Given that these raids would take place between tribes, a person in America today could be a descendant of both a slave trader and a captured tribe. Maybe they could just give themselves £50.

Far better for money to be spent on initiatives to address the disadvantages that all minorities face.
