To worry about naegleria fowleri amoebas in the UK?

I was doing a bit of research tonight into flushing my nose and read about this amoeba. I went down the rabbit hole and have now terrified myself as my son will be doing outdoor water activities this weekend.

I can't find evidence of it in the UK but equally can't find anything saying it doesn't exist here. Does anyone know anything on the subject???

In the UK climate? I wouldn't worry too - don't they love heat and live in hot springs and countries like Australia and USA?

Flushing your nose? Amoebas? I'm really worried now. Can you go into a bit more detail or should you really not?

I think you're over worrying.

SpoonBlender · 05/07/2019 22:21

You are being unreasonable.

Snowy81 · 05/07/2019 22:28

Stop worrying.

I wouldn't worry in the UK at all. I was a bit concerned quen we were swimming in lakes here in the states, and especially right now a bunch of beaches we tend to use are closed for harmful bacteria. But they tend to be in fairly stagnant warm water.

Don't watch 1000 ways to die - it has a death by nose flushing.

They are a amoeba that eats at tissue and in this case, brain tissue.

They can be found in unterilised water. Tap water too, apparently.

Unlikely, as long as you take the advice of whatever the flushing product says ex: use filtered water.

I'm not going to flush my nose, its put me right off!! Now worried about lakes and rivers but surely their can't be a real risk when there are so many watersports clubs???

Not just worried about amoebas but other infections from fresh water/lakes/gorges now!! As I saw DS will be canoeing and gorge walking this weekend.

I’ve never heard of this. However entry-level googling shows YABU to even worry about what is a vanishingly rare condition. Smile
