To be annoyed that my cat was "rescued"

We have a cat who loves to wander, he goes for miles but always come home when hungry,

He wandered to a local park (literally a 3 minute walk from my house) he loves kids because they play with him and stroke him because hes super friendly.

Someone saw him roaming around the park for a few hours and "rescued him".

Took him to their house and kept him in for 2 days, he hates being kept inside all the time. The house they took him to is literally 10 doors away from ours.

They scanned his microchip (he gets collars off so we cant do that) and saw the address and sent us a letter in the post to tell us.

We have been worried sick walking everywhere calling him etc and he was literally 10 doors away the whole time.

AIBU to be annoyed that the "rescuer" who admitted herself there was nothing wrong with and he looked happy and healthy took our cat in and kept him for 2 days when she could have walked 1 minute and knocked on the door?

Looking at their facebook she does this all the time. We took him to the vets (for a check up) and apparently she regularly brings in lost pets.

Its amazing that she does this for genuinely lost cats but, cats wander and id never dream of taking one that was healthy. If he was skinny or had a limp fair enough.

Also worried that because shes been feeding him non stop with chicken breast and tuna he will go back their now.

Why is it all cats on my local fb group are ‘lost’.

‘There’s a cat in my garden does anyone know who it belongs to?’ It’s a cat, they wander. 🙄

What!!! we've got to page 4 and nobody's mentioned Six Dinner Sid?? Has nobody READ Six Dinner Sid?!!!

People seem to have weird ideas about how much to feed a cat, too. We had cats before, but they also hunted (in the Highlands) so they had their bit and nibbles as they liked them, and if they were hungry they'd catch a mouse or whatever. But we adopted two rescues who were going to be indoors as we're living in a town now, and were looking for information on how much they should get food wise. I could only find stuff on forums about 2 or more pouches per day - each! No way, no how, they'd be square in no time.

Fortunately the two girls are typical trickle feeders, so they don't over-eat. And half a pouch each + a forkful of canned food, both morning and evening is enough for them. The one that is now spending most time outdoors is little but well-built, not skinny, definitely not fat. The other one because of not getting enough exercise was getting a bit rotund, but has shed it now after disappearing for three days (hiding nearby).

The Helpful Vancouver Vet has a great youtube channel, and amongst others explains about the different feeding habits of cats, and lots more. The guy's such a cat lover, it's wonderful to see.

jennymanara · 04/07/2019 17:41

The pouches say to feed cats 2 pouches a day plus so much dried food. I agree it is too much though.

MilkGoatee · 04/07/2019 18:11

Yeah, that's right, I think I saw that as well. Now mind, our cats are wee, reckon the littlest doesn't weigh much more than 2kg, but still, blimey, 2 pouches per day? No wonder there are all these obese cats going 'round.

Right now, there's still some food from this morning in the bowls, I think, which will be cleaned out at dinner time. They know full well how much is right for them.

MyToothPain · 04/07/2019 18:16

My old neighbourhood Facebook page was full of “have you lost a cat? There’s this cat in my garden”.

I never did decide if people really were that soft, or if it was some PA attempt to get the owner to prevent the cat going in their garden 🤔

isseywithcats · 04/07/2019 18:17

i work for a cat rescue and someone brought in a cat said it was a stary luckily he had a chip which we traced , owner someone up the road from the centre, she had only let him out half an hour before so yes thereare unwanted neglected stray cats but sometimes they have a home and are well looked after so i dont blame you for being mad at this woman

TremblingFanjo · 04/07/2019 18:21

The pouches say to feed cats 2 pouches a day plus so much dried food. I agree it is too much though. My cat would disagree Hmm

@MilkGoatee mine is a small cat, about 3.4kg but lord he can't half eat. He's on unlimited food to gain some weight and also it's kitten food. He has unrestricted access to dry and eats between 2-6 pouches/small tins a day HmmBlush

Catquest1 · 04/07/2019 18:29

@tremblingfanjo so would ours!!

Our cat has a "reputation" locally. Half the locals love him and think he is soft as grease, the other half are terrifed of him (especially if they have dogs)

Hes not nicknamed ninja cat for nothing!

needanappp · 04/07/2019 18:30

A similar thing happened to me. Our cat didn't really roam far but loved being outside, always came back at night without fail. Until one night when he didn't. I spent 3 days worried sick until I got a phone call from a woman who had found him in her shed on the day he went missing. He had a collar with my phone number on but she had decided to keep him for 3 days before ringing to tell us she had found him! I could almost understand a bit if he hadn't got a collar but he was so obviously bloody owned and well looked after!!

lunar1 · 04/07/2019 18:41

My old cat was 'rescued' by someone similar, from my front garden! She was 19, scrawny and looked her age. But she was happy and sunbathing. I had to go get her from the bloody vets. She must have been terrified, I took her on as the person who owned the house previously had passed away. She never wandered further than the garden.

MilkGoatee · 04/07/2019 18:41

YesQueen Oh, that seems a lot! Our littlest one is not interested in eating a lot, typical trickler. She's the one that eats the nibbles, the other doesn't touch them. They can be so different, can't they?

TremblingFanjo · 04/07/2019 18:41

RustyBear That's my cat right there.

Sallyseagull · 04/07/2019 18:45

I just don't understand why they sent you a letter. The whole thing is odd but that takes the biscuit.

Pippapotomus · 04/07/2019 18:57

The cat 'rescuer' wants to be a hero, and can tell everyone it was days before the poor cat was claimed. She was soo kind looking after him for that time.

Sil has 4 'rescue' cats she has saved via a Facebook group. All are now house cats so they don't get lost.... Or wander home.

YesQueen · 04/07/2019 19:06

@MilkGoatee mine literally opens his mouth (he has only one tooth) and it's like that hungry hippos game. I swear he doesn't even chew. He once ate 150g raw turkey mince (he gets some raw food). The vet commented I could do to up his food HmmConfused

TinyPaws · 04/07/2019 21:54

I've caught multiple neighbours feeding my cat. One set wanted to rescue the "skinny stray kitten" they'd been feeding. Er, no, she's not a kitten, she's sleek and healthy, well looked after and according to the vet a perfect weight. Same neighbours has 3 other cats that they "rescued".

Same cat needs special grain free biscuits otherwise she gets diarrhoea and vomiting. I just loved cleaning up the sicked up cat biscuits I didn't give her from the stair carpet and I'm sure the cat loved being made poorly by unsuitable food.

I don't get it. There's literally thousands of cats in shelters that actually need rescuing. Go get one of those instead of kidnapping someone's much loved pet.

cheesydoesit · 04/07/2019 22:11

Six Dinner Sid is a classic.

GabsAlot · 05/07/2019 13:23

Sorry i never saw youre reply-well thank god for the husband then or you might have never seen hm again

She sounds like a nightmare

jaseyraex · 05/07/2019 13:32

Where I used to live, a public footpath ran behind my back garden. My cat used to like to lie just by the footpath under a little tree in the shade. Someone once phoned me, literally from behind my back garden, to ask if I had lost my cat. My address was on the collar. I could see them from my window! People are batshit.
