Neighbour cutting grass at 8.30pm!

Would you be annoyed?

I’m not usually one to moan but it happens quite often.

He doesn’t actually cut it himself, he gets a gardener in to do it. Cutting and strimming. But it’s always between 8 - 9.30pm at night. It’s quite a large garden and it takes a while. Does that seem too late?

It’s a neighbourhood where there’s lots of kids. It’s hot so people have their windows open. There’s kids either side of him. Somebody with a young baby behind him.

Struggling to get DS off to sleep tonight. He’s super sensitive to noise.

My neighbour gets home from work around 3/4pm so why does he get it done so late??

I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable or not? We try and be respectful towards him noise wise. OH won’t go out and cut the grass on his days off until at least 10am just in case anyone is lying in.

Just play white noise for your kids. Mine have it so happily sleep through the loudest of firework displays etc.

My having kids shouldn’t mean everyone else around me not being able to carry out ordinary tasks in their house and garden of an evening.

Gardeners are busy during the summer months, so it may be the only time he's available.

It could be that he's taking a break at the hottest part of the day, or making sure that he is working in the shade.

So he's pacing his jobs out.

greenlynx · 03/07/2019 21:12

Of course, 8.30 over summer is not very late and people are still out and about but I think YANBU. If he’s starting at 8.30 and it’s a big garden he might continue well over 9 pm. It’s not a big deal once but why do this regularly? starting no later than 8 would be more reasonable in my opinion.

LakieLady · 03/07/2019 21:12

Why not cut the grass during normal hours?

If someone's really serious about lawn care, it's tricky to find the right time to do it. You can't do it first thing in the morning, because it's damp from the dew. You can't do it when the sun's on it, because it makes it shrivel and go yellow.

Late evening may be the only time of day when there are ideal grass cutting conditions.

Someone I know looks after the grass for a bowls club. He was cutting it at around 9pm the other night, as it was the earliest that the whole ... green? ... pitch?... whatever people play bowls on ... was in the shade.

My husband finished cutting our grass at 8.30pm Blush We have 2 small children who could sleep through anything so it didn't enter my mind that it could wake others. But unless you live in the middle of nowhere you're going to have disturbances from neighbours. I'm sure your children have made noise in the garden at an inconvenient time for others (shift workers, elderly etc). It's just life I'm afraid.

Celebelly · 03/07/2019 21:13

Meh I think it's just on the cusp of being acceptable. Even pre-baby I wouldn't have done something that caused a lot of noise after about 8.30 as I think it can be a bit disruptive and I'm quite conscious of not bothering people. But plenty of others don't really give two hoots so it just depends.

MrsJBaptiste · 03/07/2019 21:14

8.30pm??? 😲😲😲

It's hardly late! I was considering doing mine half an hour ago but it takes so long to get the mower out of the shed, I've decided to leave it for DH to do tomorrow.

Cloudtree · 03/07/2019 21:14

This is not too late at all, its a normal summer evening activity. YABU.

Chickpearocker · 03/07/2019 21:15

Lol tractors up and down past my house literally shaking it until 2 am I’m quite rural !

adaline · 03/07/2019 21:16

Nothing wrong with it at all imo.

Most people are at work all day - when else are they supposed to do it?

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 03/07/2019 21:16

I'd be really pissed off.
All my lovely - and less lovely - neighbours turn the noise down after 7pm, kids, gardening or anything. It's bliss.

yes, some children go to bed early, but some adults do to, some adults just come back from work and want to sit down and enjoy their garden without a racket next door.

My kids don't go to bed early by UK standards and we are still respectful of neighbours. When everybody makes small efforts, everybody benefits.

notangelinajolie · 03/07/2019 21:18

No, I don't think 8.30 is late. I'd say anytime up till 9.30pm in the summer to cut grass.

DwangelaForever · 03/07/2019 21:19

My husband has just returned into the garden from cutting the grass. Its really not that loud, my 2 year old and 10 month old both slept through it. Noise is only controlled after 11 at night so yes YABU.

Tryingtoworkitoutagain · 03/07/2019 21:19

I think it’s part and parcel living with neighbours my neighbour to one side cuts any time up to 10pm and my neighbour on the other is always out on Saturdays morning first thing could be 8am doing his - the 8am Saturday morning is worse even though I’m awake just relaxing lol

NeckPainChairSearch · 03/07/2019 21:20

I've got young children. I think it's fine. YABU, OP, sorry!

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 03/07/2019 21:23

If he knows he’s surrounded by young kids it would be considerate to have a think about that not do it that late. I’d be pissed off too. I agree with you op, too late.

SarahAndQuack · 03/07/2019 21:23

Very normal, I would think. I have good memories of drifting off to sleep in summer with the smell of mown grass and someone mowing their lawn.

category12 · 03/07/2019 21:23

That's the problem with living near people - they people.

He's not doing anything wrong.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/07/2019 21:24

DP always cuts our grass between 8/9. By the time we get home from work and eat dinner it’s not possible to be much earlier, and you need to grab a dry day here if there is one.

IrishGal21 · 03/07/2019 21:26

Tell him the Meadow Movement is hop atm and to let it just grow (see BBC article about it)

Yes that time or 8am would annoy me

shesgrownhorns · 03/07/2019 21:26

My neighbours tinkling their knives and forks while eating outside in the sun pisses me off. They are lovely nice neighbours and not noisy at all, but it still gives me unreasonable rage 😡

LellyMcKelly · 03/07/2019 21:26

Still daylight, so no.

WomanLikeMeLM · 03/07/2019 21:26

No why would you be annoyed? Its summer time, not as if its after 11pm is it?

cakeandchampagne · 03/07/2019 21:28

8:30 is not late. Like pp said, morning grass is wet with dew & mid-day mow can be hard on grass (& people). On hot/sunny days, late evening is the best time to mow.

ilovesooty · 03/07/2019 21:31

Doesn't seem too late to me.
