Can you get ones suitable for older kids / teens ? DS is already quite tall

But We are moving house and I want to maximise his floor space as much as poss as his room is quite small and he ideally needs space for a desk for studying etc

Also if any one can recommend one that would be great!

Why is it ridiculous? Confused My nearly 14 yo has one. FIL (retired, bored engineer Grin) designed and made it for her. It is an absolute pain in the arse to change the bed though.

I just put DS 15's double bed base on top of 4 Ikea 8/2 storage block units, he's quite tall so needed a full size bed so I improvised Blush the space underneath is a little area with all of his books, a comfy chair, lamp etc. him and his friends love it :) (It always remind me of heidi Grin )

Krisskrosskiss · 03/07/2019 20:04

I had a double one at uni because I wanted the floor space under it! Was in London and floor space is scarce lol! Your DH is being ridiculous. They arent only for kids.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 03/07/2019 20:09

I really wouldn't, in a few short years he's going to be pretty much an adult, will want to adult things, and a high sleeper will be inconvenient/too small/ embarrassing. They are, imo, very childish.

BurningGubbins · 03/07/2019 20:11

I had a double high sleeper in my 20s, living with my boyfriend. It was a pain to have to clamber over each other and climb down to go to the toilet or in the morning. The worst part was how squeaky it was! Every time one of us turned over it made a noise that wrecked our sleep, though we didn’t really realise until we slept somewhere else one night. Moral of the story: make sure the screws are tight!

AlaskanOilBaron · 03/07/2019 20:12

I don't think it's a durable solution, my 13 year old is way more a man than a child. I also have a 16 year old and there's simply no way it would work for all the reasons they're unsuited to an adult.

Misssophie01 · 03/07/2019 20:14

My brother had a stompa from age 9 until about last year (he's 21 now 😂) for the money they last ages and he is 6ft 5

PaulinesPenStash · 03/07/2019 20:15

Thanks all

My only worry is they're a bit childish although ds wants one!

I had one as an adult! I’m 4’11 tbf but it was a standard length

10marlboroughlites · 03/07/2019 20:19

ReddA - do you have a pic of what you have done? It's sounds ideal for my DS? (I don't know how to tag or quote?!)

sanityisamyth · 03/07/2019 20:23

My DS has the Ikea Stuva in his room. He's only 5 but he loves it and I hope it sees him through for several years to come!

onemorecakeplease · 03/07/2019 20:34

Just get a second hand one then if he changes his mind in a couple of years you haven't lost much!

AJPTaylor · 03/07/2019 20:36

We had Stompas for our older girls. Bought then second hand off eBay and then resold them 4 years later for the same money. Actual cost zero

reddA · 03/07/2019 21:10

@10marlboroughlites I don't have a pic (DS is in bed otherwise I'd take one - 15 yr olds sleep constantly!!!) it's THESE Kallax units, you can get them on FB marketplace sometimes cheaper, I've kept the legs to his bed for the future too. Shop bought high sleepers are so expensive, it's easier to just create what you want - you could even put a wardrobe underneath, maybe add a support if you want extra strength but it's great to get as much out of a room as possible :)

granadagirl · 03/07/2019 21:19

Study bed is a high sleeper, and just folds away

WickedGoodDoge · 03/07/2019 21:28

6’ 17 year old DS still has a high sleeper. There’d be no room in his room for all his stuff if he didn’t have one!

DD(14) still has one as well.

granadagirl · 03/07/2019 22:22

Sorry meant to not a high sleeper but stores things away, so more floor space

IloveJudgeJudy · 04/07/2019 11:01

DD had one for a few years. Hers was metal so made a fair bit of noise. I would say it's fine but don't get a metal one!

DS had one in his Erasmus year in Berlin. DH and I slept on it when we visited. You could definitely sit up an watch a laptop, but you couldn't stand. I'm fairly short so I could kind of crouch, but DH and DS had to walk on their knees. It was a very big double with space around it. It had been custom-made for the room.

thecatsthecats · 04/07/2019 11:05

A studybed may be expensive, but think about it in the context of the cost of a house that would be large enough to accommodate all needed furniture?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 04/07/2019 11:29

DD has one because despite being almost an adult she still manages to fall out of any bed that doesnt have bars on whenever she sleeps in one. We got rid of her double bad after a couple of months for a high sleeper. She has to change her own sheets though.

Teddybear45 · 04/07/2019 11:31

If he’s tall it will become unuseable pretty quickly so I can see your DH’s point.
