AIBU to think there is no mandate for a no deal brexit

The next prime minister should not take us out of the EU without a clear mandate from the people. No deal was not explicitly on the ballot paper in the 2016 referendum. We can't pretend to be a democracy if the people have no say in the potentially most calamitous decision of recent decades.

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Fair enough - but the fact that the official Leave campaign were promising a deal probably contributed to people thinking it wasn’t an issue.

YoungEurope · 03/07/2019 18:18

So, are you suggesting another referendum? What would the options be? Would no deal be on the ballot paper?

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/07/2019 18:53

IamtheDevilsAvocado

Revoke is the only reasonable way forward.

There is No mandate for no deal

You surely can't post the first whilst stating the second.
If there is no mandate for no deal (i agree)
There also isn't a mandate to revoke.

Songsofexperience · 04/07/2019 08:15

There also isn't a mandate to revoke.

Indeed, which is why we need a new ref.

Indeed.

Now you just need to get our glorious leaders to see that.

The ONLY truth is that Cameron fucked up and ran away.

Cameron is the worst PM in my lifetime. He put the needs of his party (to neutralise UKIP) above the needs of the country, which is tantamount to treason imo.

Shameful man.

It's weird to see how few people openly support Brexit anymore. Obviously the diehard leavers are the most noisy but the normal people are usually pro-remain. I think four years ago there were a lot more people willing to talk about voting to leave.

This must be because people have changed their minds and now want to remain if they voted to leave previously. I wonder how many people have changed their minds and if its enough?

Chloemol · 06/08/2019 23:44

I voted leave, and like many others who also voted leave, did so realising one option would be no deal. I also knew, like many leavers, it’s possibly the only option as we knew the EU would make it as difficult as possible to leave as an example to others. Little did we know that we would be at the mercy of a bunch of MPs arrogant enough to believe they know best, refusing Mays deal three times thus heading for no deal anyway.

Now the EU are saying they will not renegotiate, so who should we blame for no deal? Our own MPs, or the arrogant EU who are not prepared to renegotiate ?

Chloemol · 06/08/2019 23:47

@ Cybergenesis. My theory is people still support leaving ( indeed a lot of my friends who voted remain have now changed their minds) but we are just soooooo tired of the whole shambles it’s not worth the effort of talking about it anymore, especially on MN where you get shouted down all the time
