To ask you to help me choose my DOG BREED? Doberman or Boxer

DH and I are getting a puppy. We’re undecided between two breeds though ...

Doberman and Boxer

I’m autistic so tend to read a hell of a lot of info and statistics regarding stuff I’m interested in. Everything I’ve read tends to say that a Doberman has a more stable temperament than a boxer. Infact, boxers have killed more people than Doberman’s have and have also severely injured more people in attacks than Doberman’s.

DH is adamant that he wants a boxer “because they’re cute and funny” but the statistics are right there! I know the majority are lovely dogs and they are funny but as I say ... the statistics, research and info suggests that a Doberman would be a safer option.

We have a french bulldog already. So new dog would need to be “dog friendly” and again, Doberman seems better in this regard.

I intend to take the dog to training classes and socialising classes etc whichever breed we get but I’m thinking a Doberman will be easier to train? Not as crazy and a bit more stable?

I am in touch with breeders of both dogs. Both have puppies ready in a few weeks.

@howwudufeel @Kayjay2018 that face is typical of a Dobermann in a picture.

Here is our boy today. Wearing headphones courtesy of the kids. The kids he adores.

I can't believe all the nonsense on this thread about the breed. Everyone still thinks of Magnum PI opening credits with the two Dobermann!

I’ve got a Dobie, had her since a pup. She needs a lot of exercise & stimulation. She’s great with other dogs & people, well trained on the lead & her recall is great. We rescued a smaller breed Male dog when she was 2 & they love each other, no fighting.

However, I wouldn’t have another as she’s so needy, she’s a Velcro dog & sticks to all of us in the house. If we go upstairs she walks around crying & she’s often on our laps. Shes 32kg & a big powerful dog, which is not always what you want when trying to watch TV. She’s clumsy too & forever knocking into & breaking stuff.

I like Dobermans and my MIL had one who was lovely. However I'd have boxer over a Doberman any day - loving, soft and lots of fun.

Yes they are quite needy Grin here he is with his blankie Grin

Last photo now, no more Dobie-spam I promise!

@thetwinkles what a lovely photo! Doberman's are awesome dogs and members of the family!! Her only downside is her clumsy paws - I got a bop in the face the other evening as she went to sit on me!

I was scared of all dogs before I met her and her size was a bit daunting that first meeting. I absolutely adore her, she is the soppiest dog in the world.

@Offredismysister I think we are lucky with ours, she really isn't needy in that way at all. She loves a cuddle but can easily be left at home. Our doggy daycare has mentioned that she has never accepted a Doberman before and may not again as normally they are hard work in a needy sense.

We have just got a new rescue and they adore each other. He has bought a new lease of life to her!

mrsed1987 · 13/07/2019 22:31

Boxers everytime. They are soppy, loyal beautiful dogs.

Offredismysister · 13/07/2019 22:37

I must add, although needy, she doesn’t have separation anxiety at all, weirdly.
I would just like to eat alone & go to the toilet alone 😂

CathyandHeathcliff · 13/07/2019 22:41

We have always had boxers, they’re very loyal dogs, good with people. But not so good with other dogs in my experience!

Kayjay2018 · 13/07/2019 22:58

@thetwinkles does yours have a sucky blanket? Our has a comfort blanket she sucks when tired. We have come across a few others whose Doberman's do the same

If you already live an active lifestyle and know you can commit to the needs of the dog (saying this as a full time worker with a fully well rounded and cared for collie so no judgment here-it's easily doable if it's your passion ! ) I'd go doberman. Beautiful souls. Boxers are lovely but a bit too daft for me

Artykitty666 · 13/07/2019 23:19

When I upgrade to a bigger house and possibly get another dog, however, I'd also happily consider a boxer. I've been helpful.

LegalConsultant · 13/07/2019 23:32

So I have a 6m old Dobe.. He is already fully crate trained, well socialised, has no separation anxiety and knows a load of commands already. He is great with kids and has the gentlest of temperaments.

I dont know too much about doberman, but I am a boxer owner, and in our house we just love them but there are some issues with boxers, I'll run through our experiences.
Health problems. Both our boys have had issues with allergies so spend a lot of time on medication, ear problems are not rare- my current boy is on steroid ear cream at £60 a tube. They have really sensitive tummies too.
Health insurance is extortionate for boxers.

I've only ever met the squishiest, loveliest boxers. They have a loving nature, but they tend to be batshit crazy, they're mad as a box of frogs until about 4 apparently.
In the space of 5 minutes this afternoon the dog had been out, done a shit, and trod in it ( did I mention seriously smart?) He ran in the house, through the kitchen, hallway, up the stairs, into the living room, over the sofa and into my room on the bed. There was SHIT EVERYWHERE! It's the sheer fact that he had covered the house in shit in 2 minutes flat.
With a boxer, if they wanna get somewhere- theyll do it. My boy jumps the highest gates and has jumped half a set of stairs upto the gate stopping him from getting to my daughters floor of the house. Then pissed himself because he was nervous because he couldn't get down.

The old one who was forever escaping was found one day laying in my daughters empty bath...I still dont know how he managed it!
Hes ran at the glass door and knocked himself out, then ran at the kitchen cupboard probably 3 days later.

They sit on anything (or anyone) he will lay on your franchie like hes a cushion. You'll never have any personal space ever again. I woke up in the middle of the night once to realise the dog was using my pubic bone as a chin rest.

They have a lovely nature, they're sweet, proverbial forever babies. They love a good cuddle and human interaction, and as much as I love Boxers. I really dont think I'd sign up for it again. I'd want a dog who was maybe a bit more self reliant. Doberman really could be the way forward.

has the gentlest of temperaments

I mean, he is super cute.
But at 6 months old you don't know that he has the 'gentlest of temperaments' at all.
As a larger breed he has only just started to hit maturity.
His full temperament won't be apparent until about 2...
