'woman' sounds rude, 'lady' sounds very formal, 'girl' sounds try-hard for anyone over the age of about 30. So what word so you use?

TheChain · 02/07/2019 22:52

Woman... what’s rude about that?

Happyspud · 02/07/2019 22:53

Woman. Lady if speaking to the kids I think.

CassianAndor · 02/07/2019 22:53

Woman, mainly.

WendyImHome · 02/07/2019 22:53

Woman. Why does it sound rude to you?

Duckyduckyquackquack · 02/07/2019 22:54

It just sounds a bit dismissive to me, especially if it's someone you're on friendly terms with

GruciusMalfoy · 02/07/2019 22:54

Woman or lady. Neither are rude or too formal, IMO.

My pet hate is grown women calling themselves girls. It grates on me.

OhEliza · 02/07/2019 22:54

Women. Girls is ridiculous, ladies is twee.

Never thought of 'women' being rude.

VivienneHolt · 02/07/2019 22:54

depends on the context! I’m guilty of saying girls but I know it irritates a lot of people.

cardibach · 02/07/2019 22:55

Woman. Girl is t ‘try hard’, it’s simply inaccurate for a person over 18. Lady is ridiculous and has all sorts of old fashioned connotations.

TheChain · 02/07/2019 22:55

It just sounds a bit dismissive to me, especially if it's someone you're on friendly terms with
If you know them then surely you’d just use their name?

cardibach · 02/07/2019 22:56

How is it dismissive? Is it low status to be a woman?
I had coffee today with a woman I used to work with. We’re mates. It was nice. What’s dismissive or rude about that?

newtlover · 02/07/2019 22:56

depends
generic women- women, ie 'women are under-represented in STEM
a particular group of women, especially if they are present, or older, ladies, ie 'have the ladies at that table been offered some tea?'
as a HCP, referring to an actual or potential patient, lady ie 'where is the lady in bed 6?'
girls- NEVER

zippey · 02/07/2019 22:58

It depends on context but I don’t think it matters. Can you say why you think women is rude?

I usually say women or girls, sometimes “people” is fine. I’ve used “Wifies” before, it’s a Scottish term for women.

Duckyduckyquackquack · 02/07/2019 22:58

Not necessarily if you're talking to a person who doesn't know them eg to DH about colleagues

elQuintoConyo · 02/07/2019 22:58

Woman is far, far from rude! How can you think it's rude?
Lady smacks of Little fecking Britain (is that what it was called? David Walliams shite). Might as well call me Ickle Princess.
Girl is patronising and I refuse to use it on an over-18.

fromthefloorboardsup · 02/07/2019 22:58

Almost always just 'woman'

CaravanHero · 02/07/2019 22:59

All three depending on the context.

A new woman joined my department in work today.

I told ds3’s to mind the lady he nearly ran into yesterday.

Tomorrow I’m going out for drinks with the girls 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheSmallAssassin · 02/07/2019 23:00

I try to resist the idea that "woman" is rude, what message are we telling ourselves if it is? So, I used to say "lady", but now I always say "woman".

TheChain · 02/07/2019 23:00

Not necessarily if you're talking to a person who doesn't know them eg to DH about colleagues
Then you’d just say “Carol from HR” or whatever. Or say “A woman I work with”. I honestly don’t know what is rude about saying “woman” Confused

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/07/2019 23:00

Not necessarily if you're talking to a person who doesn't know them eg to DH about colleagues

"Linda said 'blah blah blah'"
"Who's Linda?"
"She works in shipping"

Woman if not.

Justathinslice · 02/07/2019 23:01

" women" or "ladies" ( I'm foreign so it has different connotations I think).

I hate hate hate " gals"

Angry
TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 02/07/2019 23:03

Sharon?

TheChain · 02/07/2019 23:03

I hate hate hate " gals"

I agree! “Gals” seems old fashioned and only used in 1940s films where the women were either feeble or slutty 😂😂😂

Duckyduckyquackquack · 02/07/2019 23:04

I don't like using the word 'man' either, if that makes it better. At least there we have the word 'chap' which seems a bit friendlier

Going back a long time. My friends and I used to refer to each other as Mrs-woman, affectionately. It stuck and we all use it for everyone now. Only use it informally mind.

For work or otherwise it would be woman if I didn't know her name. I call my daughters ladies.

The only terms I detest are "birds" or "the Mrs". Bleh.
