Hey guys,

Posting here for traffic and also cause you were all so helpful last time!

Basically moving out soon me and my DP. Problem is DP doesn't have an excellent credit score (due to some previous debts that began when he lost a job a while back and just spiralled out of control - he is paying these back now and hasn't yet missed any payments for months but of course credit score takes a while to climb).

Second issue is he is currently awaiting finding out if he is getting a permanent contract for his current job. As it turns out he has been applying to new jobs anyways as he didn't like the uncertainty of a permanent contract over a temp one so may have a new job in the next few weeks.

My question is, how much will this affect us for private rent? His credit score is about 150 (on clear score) and I'm worried if his switch in jobs coincides with our application to rent this could mean we get knocked back.

Would it be best to apply in my name with him listed as a secondary tenant? Will this mean his credit score/contract won't affect us as much? And if we did do this is there way to change it down the line once he has a permanent contract etc to add his name so both of us are 'main' Tennant's?

I have no clue how this all works 😭 any advice appreciated!

Thank you!

I'm not sure of the exact credit score boundaries but me and my DP moved into a new rental recently and he has a TERRIBLE credit score (long story) and it was fine! Especially if he's sorting it out now. I thought the same as you but the letting agent wouldn't let me go as a lead tenant without him as he isn't a dependant, so beware you might not be allowed to do that.

@chaoscategorised ahhh that's so reassuring to hear! Yeah that would make sense I guess to not be able to have him as secondary. Thank you!

Also useful to know - before we rented our current place though a letting agent, we rented somewhere else privately (through OpenRent). We were just really upfront with the landlord there and said 'his credit score isn't great but we can give you a reference from a previous landlord, there were never any issues' and he appreciated the honesty and wasn't bothered (although I don't know if all landlords would be that nice - he only had one property and was new to it all!). But it's definitely not a complete barrier so don't panic.

The letting agent we went through used an online referencing agency who only asked our workplaces to confirm our salaries and that we worked there, so a new job shouldn't actually a problem either I don't think?

Good luck - it's so nerve-wracking but fingers crossed it'll all be fine ☺️
