3 years for somebody who shot their own grandson? The poor little boy knew what his grandfather had done and asked him why he had done it Sad Angry

He has never shown any remorse nor apologised for killing his great grandson. It's a really shocking, tragic case.

MenuPlant · 02/07/2019 17:33

He actually shot him? Deliberately?

It's not at all clear from the article.

Mamapizzacake · 02/07/2019 17:33

I just heard this on the radio and was saddened to hear he only go three years.
He didn’t have a license for the gun so he shouldn’t have had it, yes he accidentally killed his grandchild but he is still dead.
The mum said he hasn’t apologised for it, which is horrific, and apparently isn’t showing remorse (maybe it’s shock/grief)
I understand it was an accident (we hope) but this was a completely preventable death by a) not having an unlicensed gun and b) not having firearms around children, therefore he should have got longer in my opinion.

Singlenotsingle · 02/07/2019 17:34

That was the first thing I thought when I heard it on the radio this afternoon! "Is that ALL?" He should be locked up and the key thrown away!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/07/2019 17:37

No remorse is shocking- hope he has a truly horrifying time in prison, vile old man!

LauderSyme · 02/07/2019 17:41

He was convicted of manslaughter not murder, so the court accepted he had not intended to kill the child. An article I read about the case stated that he'd been utterly negligent about gun safety, had illegally enhanced the power of the gun, had no gun licence and lied to the police afterwards about the circumstances of the shooting. If it hadn't been for those aggravating factors, I suspect his sentence would have been much lighter.

The whole case was shocking but his failure to apologise to the parents is unbelievable. At the very least you'd have thought he'd be stricken with remorse. Apparently the extended family has been split down the middle with different parties taking different sides.

floraloctopus · 02/07/2019 23:23

According to the BBC he was checking the gun to see if it was loaded or not whilst it was pointed at his grandson. What idiot would do that ?

Gooigi · 02/07/2019 23:26

Yanbu. He should've got at least twice that.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/07/2019 23:49

Yes we can all accept the fact that it was tragic accident. However at the same time its an accident that would have been avoid had the idiot not been pissing about with a dangerous weapon. He could have tested it at another time when the little one wasn't there. Its not like he was under threat from intruders at that time. Therefore what was so urgent.
3 years is an insult to this little boys memory. That's less time than this poor boy was alive. How is that justice.
He should have got at least 20 years oh and I'd add on another 10 for his lack of remorse, too.
Rip little one x

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/07/2019 23:53

Oh and 3 years aka 1.5 years.
The other 1.5 years out on licence. Angry

lyralalala · 03/07/2019 08:12

I think three years is too low a sentence for someone who illegally owned a firearm who shot someone, let alone killed them.
