Dog sitting for cousin

For context I live in US.

Where we live it has been hot and humid. Feels like 100 degrees Fahrenheit since Friday last week. The lowest it has gotten at night was a feel of 84 degrees. No wind and very humid. Feels like walking into a brick wall when walking outside.

My family and I live in a detached home with aircon. My cousin called Saturday morning wondering if we would dog sit. She has a 10 year old husky. Big bushy dog more use to colder temps. The dog had been sleeping in the garage at her house with the door closed just going to bathroom on garage floor.

My cousins home has no aircon. Windows do not open. She has a 6 month daughter who was getting over heated so they went to stay with a family friend.

Cousin asked if I would dog sit. I said of course. It wasn't fair the dog being locked up in such heat not being able to go outside.

I have just woken up this morning to her dog having poo'd all over my ground floor. This is the second morning for it to happen. I have been getting up and letting dog out through the night but it still happens.

We are putting new flooring in on Wednesday. I dont want the dog going to bathroom all over the new floor.

WIBU to call the local dog boarding house to see if they have room from Wednesday on? Till Monday when cousin is getting aircon in her place.

Boarding place has aircon and outdoor space for dog. I would also pay if my cousin could not.

I just dont know what else to do. I cant keep getting up in the mornings and cleaning up after the dog every day.

I think that is fine but my dog boarding won't take any dogs without full vaccination records including clear fecal scan. Do you have access to these?

dreichuplands · 02/07/2019 15:32

Also they have sent out notes warning about booking early for July 4th for months now, they may be full.

dreichuplands · 02/07/2019 15:32

Also costs are usually double during holidays.

I don't think it would be unreasonable to call the dog boarding house especially if it's defecating on your floor, sounds awful. It's what I would do. Is the dog not properly house trained, and does your cousin know this when she asked you to look after her dog? Does the dog do this in her house?

AryaStarkWolf · 02/07/2019 15:34

hhmmm I mean you said the dog was going to the toilet on the floor of your cousins garage so you much have known he wasn't house trained?

CalmdownJanet · 02/07/2019 15:43

Call your cousin and tell her to sort it out. Why would you do it? "Cousin your dog is shitting all over my house, he needs to go, today", simple enough surely? Nobody would expect you to keep a shitting dog in your house

Nearlythere1 · 02/07/2019 15:47

If you live in a hot state I would be telling her to get that dog rehomed somewhere colder. That's tantamount to animal abuse having an arctic dog in a hot climate.

Serehawk · 02/07/2019 16:02

AryaStarkWolf We did not know about her going in the garage and not being house trained. My mom told me last night when I spoke with her. This is a recent development.

Previously when we dog sat she was fine with no accidents.

Nearlythere1 Cousin is getting aircon so she doesn't have to rehome her dog.

I have been in contact with cousin. She is at work and wont be able to call boarding as job doesn't allow personal calls during work hours. (She called me before work to check on her dog.)

I told her I would call boarding as their office closes before she is off work.

I did call and got her set up to take dog tomorrow on her day off. She will have all the records with her to take her.

I will make it through one more night hoping for no big accidents.

Any helpful ideas to make it through one more night? My mom has suggested putting down old newspaper to make cleanup easier.

I would put down puppy pads ( or dc's bed mats) and try and confine the area that the dog is in.

Annabk · 02/07/2019 16:07

Just put plastic sheeting down on the floor (the kind painters/decorators use).

Drum2018 · 02/07/2019 16:12

I would insist cousin arrives early in the morning to clean up any mess before taking the dog to the boarding kennel. I would have been furious and after one night the dog would have been out of my house.

Drum2018 · 02/07/2019 16:14

If the shitting all over the garage/house is only a recent thing the dog may be ill, have heatstroke, be dehydrated from the heat. She should probably get it checked out.

Jemima232 · 02/07/2019 16:18

That sounds like a very unfortunate and stressed dog.

Poor thing - and I understand you don't want to be dealing with dog faeces - but it will be even more upset if it's put into kennels.

Serehawk · 02/07/2019 16:28

Drum2018 I agree the dog might be I'll. I mentioned it to boarding when I called. They have an onsite vet who can check her.

Jemima232 I am hoping when she goes to kennel it will be better than my home. This kennel is local to me so I have been there. They have separate pens for each dog. Each kennel has a dog door that leads out to a shaded dog run. Each run is separate so that dogs cant fight.

This is better as I know the dog likes to be outside. My yard is small with no fence so dog has to go out on leash or tie out chain. Which is not fair to her. At least at the vet she will have the freedom to come in or out as she pleases.
