We had to change our seat to the cybex pallas- so far inescapable!

I added an extra strap with something only a grown up could open

There is the Houdini strap - goes over the buckle iirc to stop a child unclipping them. But tbh I went for the short sharp tap on the back of the hand when mine undid their clip. I'd sooner that than risk putting something on a buckle which could hamper a speedy exit from the car in an emergency. Might not be a popular view but it's mine.

Even tiny toddlers understand more than you give them credit for. Give him a toy, tell him you can play with this, but not with that.

Also, promise a treat, such as going to the zoo or park or picnic or something fun that won't be an inconvenience to cancel. At the same time explain that the car seat is to keep him safe in the car, and if he undoes the buckle, the car will stop and the treat will not happen. Follow it through. And discuss it with him afterwards.

My eldest son did this once. Yuuuuwwwwwge tantrums ensued, but he learned his lesson, and was actually a source of conversation from him for months after!

Some mums in one of my SEN groups had this issue, and using a specific type of harness (crelling? Something like that anyway) seemed to work well. Might be worth looking into.

I ordered an anti escape chest clip from Amazon and it worked really well. After a few goes with that on my dc stopped trying to escape. It locked on to each strap and had a slider over the buckle so dc couldn't release it. It stops them being able to slide their arms out of the straps.

We used the Houdini Strap too and it was fantastic. Highly recommend!

Us too!
Its a great seat and dd was way more comfortable in it too. Also is apparantly safer than a standard 5 point harness seat.

Houdini Stop worked for us. Mind you, if your child is determined enough they can burst it open but hopefully by then they'll have got bored of it and switched to trying to annoy you in a different way.

TitianaTitsling · 02/07/2019 16:17

coolest you do realise we have jinxed ourselves with the so far inescapable statement...…

The police patrol who came to help when I’d stopped on the hard shoulder of the m62 to put ds back in his seat.

He explained the facts of life sternly to ds who hasn’t touched the buckle since Grin

Both of mine worked the Houdini strap out in moments. I kid you not.

What worked for us: approaching two friendly police men at a petrol station to talk to the children about the dangers. Scared the kids and worked a treat! 😂

Also, driving round the bend of our quiet street, just before our drive, our youngest undid his seatbelt and was promptly deposited in the footwell. That seemed to reinforce the point quite effectively.

I sympathise. We had it happen a couple of times on the motorway and it left me shaken.
