Really want the mate 30 pro as the camera is amazing. But... China Grin would I be making a mistake? Worried I'll end up with a dud phone!

Also. Any recommendations re networks? Get fairly good coverage as am in a city but found ee customer service a bit useless...

I got a new one a month ago when I broke my old one. They are the best, most reliable phones I've ever had.

I'm more bothered about having a phone that does what I want tbh that all the controversy.

New phones which have already been made shouldn't have any issues.

Pinkyyy · 02/07/2019 11:48

Google pixels are amazing!

IncandescentShadow · 02/07/2019 11:48

I got one recently, to replace my ever more unreliable iPhone 7. Its the best phone I've had yet, and the cheapest. I got it from my local Vodafone store. £89.99. It does everything the iPhone does and the battery lasts for days!

Not sure what the concern is?
Pretty much all phones are made in sweatshops in China.

gotmychocolateimgood · 02/07/2019 11:51

Huawei are great. Mine charges so quickly and holds its charge well. Great camera too. Used to have a Samsung.

guardiandevil · 02/07/2019 11:52

@familycourtq the concern isn't that they're made in China. There's a lot of controversy around the security. I'm worried about updates not being available

I have a P20 Pro and it's the best phone I've ever had in my life. No exaggeration.

My husband worked in telecommunications and still sold plenty of them. Pretty sure Google spies on us and collects confidential information anyway, the US are scared of the competition.

ShartGoblin · 02/07/2019 11:54

I've had a Huawei P10 for 2 years and it's the best phone I've ever owned, would recommend it to anyone. The camera quality is incredible, the battery life is still 1-2 days after a lot of use. I have frequently dropped it on hard floors and had no broken screens or any issues with it. I genuinely can't fault it and downgraded my contract to sim only recently because I have no interest in replacing it.

I'm with Three and have had no issues with coverage or support, they have always been helpful when I've needed to contact them.

PeaBea · 02/07/2019 11:57

Love how everyone is saying how great their phones are but not addressing the security or update query alluded to by the OP because she's concerned to buy an expensive product from a company that isn't necessarily supported to trade with key countries around the world.

I don't have an answer for you OP but I'm trying to redirect the conversation to one that would be of help to you! Grin

NeverSayFreelance · 02/07/2019 12:05

My DP has one and it's a fantastic phone. The camera is incredible! I couldn't care less about the China controversy

Reallybadidea · 02/07/2019 12:12

I think the latest news is that Trump is softening his stance on Huawei. I'd get one (I have actually). The phone itself isn't going to stop functioning, only issue might be security updates being slightly delayed. Personally I think that Google will find a workaround, like other companies are doing.

Nonnymum · 02/07/2019 12:14

I've hot a Huawei and it's great, the best phone I've had. And Trump has softened his stance on China anyway. I would get one.

BullBullBull · 02/07/2019 12:23

Wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole. Awful phones

quietcontentment · 02/07/2019 12:27

I love mine, however I bought mine before the google ban so mine will continue getting support, not sure what happens to those manufactured after the ban....

familycourtq · 02/07/2019 12:30

OK. At the point where we find out that the Chinese government has been asking Huawei to hand over data (the security concern). We will have much deeper issues than a few people's mobiles not working.

I am seriously concerned by this and by the fact that most US corporations regard EU and Uk laws as optional, but that concern is outweighed by my desire to have and use a smartphone and lack of alternatives.

duebaby2 · 02/07/2019 12:49

I'd buy a different phone and wait to see what comes of the android ban from google.
Current news -
Current restrictions mean that Google has pulled Android support for Huawei, but a temporary licence has since been issued that allows Google to support and update the Android software running on existing devices, but this expires in August.

coral13 · 02/07/2019 12:49

@Peabea we have answered. The answer is that their phones are good we don't care.

PeaBea · 02/07/2019 13:02

@coral13 good to know that your phones will be good now - but that no one's considering what might happen in the future.

ritzbiscuits · 02/07/2019 13:12

I work in mobile apps for a living. There is no way I'd buy a Huawei until the Android system is resolved! You absolutely do not want an expensive phone without an up to date operating system. Hackers/Fraudsters are going to want to exploit that!

guardiandevil · 02/07/2019 13:39

@ritzbiscuits I was starting to think I was the only one!

SpoonBlender · 02/07/2019 13:46

It's bad enough getting updates on Android phones under £400 anyway, you don't want US trade embargoes making it even harder. I'd skip - go for a Pixel 3a if you want the lovely camera.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 02/07/2019 14:12

My husband works in telecoms securities and let's just say its a no from him! The involvement of the Chinese govt in company affairs is not to be underestimated.

PettyContractor · 02/07/2019 14:38

Are there any Android phone makers who update the software after the first year or two? Assuming I'm right in thinking not, it's not going to make a lot of difference.

I thought it was only Apple that updated their devices for several years.

I speak as someone who has updated two devices to LineageOS precisely because their version of Android was years out of date, and never going to be updated. But actually, I wouldn't do that with an important device, because some apps will only run on a device with an official version of Android on it.

ritzbiscuits · 02/07/2019 16:12

@PettyContractor you are right operating systems are not available for all devices. Still, if you take the latest Android system, Android 9, that's still available for the original Google Pixel 1 (released in 2016). That's also going to get Google Q coming out in the late Summer. So that's still receiving new updates 3.5 years on.

Personally, if you are looking at an Android phone, I would choose Google over anything else. The Android operating system is pure (hasn't been tinkered with) and Google have a more vested interest in keeping their devices up to date.

ritzbiscuits · 02/07/2019 16:14

Oh, and meant to say, there is a difference between not getting an update after 3 years vs buying a brand new phone and it having out of date software straight away.
