Posting here for traffic...

We are going on holiday this Sunday for 5 days (photo showing where).
The in laws have booked it and it’s not somewhere I would choose to go myself with two young kids.
It’s going to be my family (partner and two kids, 4&5 and our dog)
Partners parents and his brother and sister in law.

Has anyone been here? Especially with young kids. I’ve taken a quick look online but I can’t see much to do other than walks and boat rides. There is a soft play but that’s only going to take up a few hours.
Any ideas on other kid friendly things?

As there’s a whole group of you and it’s only 5 days then won’t you be doing outings that everyone wants to do and that you can’t do at home? (Eg not soft play.)

Exploring the local area will take up almost all your time I imagine. Kinder Scout in particular looks amazing. For a more kids focussed day out you could ride the cable cars (Heights of Abraham) and reach the park at the top. It has a children’s play area and a cafe etc.

We can go off and do our own thing so that’s not an issue.

The soft play where we are is pretty small and we don’t go often due to its silly opening times, so it will be a treat for them to go to a big soft play.

The cable cars sounds great, I will check it out. Thank you!

You know how you sometimes read a poster worrying about their post being too "outing"? Them being too readily identifiable in real life?

There's tonnes to do with kids in Derbyshire but you're quite far north and some of my favourites will be a long drive. Crich tramway museum is brilliant for kids of your ages. If you're taking kids bikes or scooters then any of the cycle trails are brilliant for family walks. There's Chatsworth house which has a good farm park, and lots of other animal parks. Bakewell has a nice public splash park. Use the dayoutwiththekids.co.uk website to see what's in the local Hayfield & Buxton area.

You must have spent only seconds googling if you couldn’t find anything to do with young children around the Peak District?!!

Cycle on a section of the Tissington, Monsall or High Peak trails.
The Museum of Childhood at Sudbury Hall.
The Blue John Mine (or other mine, there are several)
Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath
Cresswell Crags

Seriously, you need to google some more!

Ellisandra · 02/07/2019 11:09

My suggestions are more south / east of where you are, as it’s the area of the Peaks I know better. But just look on a map for nearby towns and google things to do with kids. There’ll be plenty online.

Again more south / east but you’re only 30 miles from Carsington Water.

Do you mean you’re worried about the OP @Reith ?

It’s not like she’s posted about secretly hating a relative or taking it up the bum with her boss, is it? She’s just looking for kid friendly things to do in Derbyshire. Does it matter if she gets outed?

Ooo... or are you suggesting an advanced search might show something interesting to someone who knows her irl?

Reith · 02/07/2019 11:44

I was just struck at how much detail she was willing to share compared with the majority of posters who worry (needlessly) at being identifiable.

I think the Swizzells Matlow sweets factory is in New Mills see if they offer a tour.

tttigress · 02/07/2019 11:59

No suggestions, but I would have thought it was a good place for a family holiday (when you said it wasn't somewhere you would choose, I thought it was going to be San Antonio, Ibiza, or similar!)

cheeseNcrackersgromit · 02/07/2019 12:31

It’s just preference really. Some people like the outdoorsy holidays but we live in the countryside so most of our adventures are walking, cycling, going to pubs etc.. I like a nice relaxing holiday by the beach.

Reith I’m only looking for recommendations, if anyone I knew saw it, I wouldn’t mind.

It was barely a google search tbh. I find it easier to ask people who have been, so I can get ideas on what’s good and what’s not. Google search doesn’t always come up with everything and someone might know a great place to go.

Thanks for the suggestions!
