AIBU to want to pull my tooth out

I have impacted wisdom teeth and one of the bottoms ones is trying to come through I am in agony with it I’m taking painkillers and using Bonjela like it’s going out of fashion but this tooth is still causing me no end of pain to the point that I feel sick with it I’ve burnt my face on using my hot water bottle I can’t sleep for the pain and right now I would happily cut open my own gum and pull the stupid tooth out. I know IABU I am just in so much pain that I can’t even think straight. Any suggestions for what I can try. I’m going to sort out a dentist so I can get this tooth removed but until then I need something that will get rid of this pain.

@Kyogre thank you so do I had enough of this bloody tooth now it needs to be evicted.

@jamoncrumpets haha lol I can well believe I would be too difficult for me to get out but these are the crazy thoughts I have when I’ve not had any sleep. I will be phoning them up and finding some strong painkillers. Thank you glad you have been sorted out.

@MaMisled thank you I will do I don’t care how far I have to go to get this tooth sorted it’s getting taken out one way or another.

@dottiedodah I won’t pull it out myself as much as I would like to. I’m going to phone them up wish I had thought of doing that over the weekend I probably would’ve been sorted by now. Thank you I will do that didn’t think of paramol. Oh thank you for that tip I will do that the pain always seems to be worse when I’m laying down. Thank you xx

If it is impacted and still unerrupted you will need to have an opt xray taken to determine how close the roots of the tooth are in relation to the nerves which supply sensation to your lips, tongue and other teeth as a bare minimum.
If it is close to the nerve then the maxfac dept are the only ones who can refer you for a cone beam scan (free if maxfac refer you) you can be charged considerable amounts privately as this scan is not performed by NHS dentists unless at a dental hospital as part of a referal.
A routine NHS dentist would not be happy to perform this if it is close to the nerves due to the risk of nerve damage and thus it is left to specialist oral surgeons who do it day in/day out.
If you require sedation for your treatment again the maxfac dept can offer this for no charge whereas an NHS dentist in practice will charge you in excess of £150 per hour for sedation alone as it is not covered by the NHS in practice. (specialised qualified staff are required to perform sedation)
I wont lie it can take upwards of 6 mths just for a consultation appt for maxfac but once refered in we have to treat you within 3 mths or we fall outside of our NHS targets and get heavily fined. If money is no issue you can pay a private dentist to perform all of the above for you & when I was in private practice the fees would have been
£130 for consultation
£50 for opt xray.
£200 for cone beam scan if required.
£150 for sedation
£180 for surgical removal by a specialist oral surgeon
obviously fees are determined by the practice themselves so im not saying you couldnt find it cheaper but examples given for a rough cost comparison.
Yes the hospital referal takes time but it would be free of charge.
All of the above would be determined by the findings on the xray though. If it is nowhere near the nerves then your own dentist may be happy to attempt a surgical removal for you.

If the tooth in front is removed, the wisdom tooth may then erupt fine. This may be an easier solution if the wisdom tooth is completely under the gum. The pain/ possible infection may well be more to do with the tooth in front, so still worth investigating if the dentist can sort this

Gatoadigrado · 02/07/2019 09:41

Ps because of referred pain, it can often be tricky to know yourself precisely which tooth is the cause of the problem

Yousicktwistedfruit · 02/07/2019 10:07

@shazkevincarrotlover oh god didn’t realise they would need to do that. What’s a cone beam scan? Is it really that expensive for sedation I had no idea whenever i’ve been referred to the sedation clinic I’ve never had to pay. Really I did think I would be waiting a a while for an appointment to see them I know I wait a while for the sedation clinic. I’m on universal credit so there’s no way I could pay to go private otherwise I would if money wasn’t a problem. Wow it’s expensive to get teeth sorted out. Thank you for letting me know.

@Gatoadigrado oh I will check that with the dentist I just know that all 3 of the wisdom teeth I have left are impacted and they didn’t know if they would try and come through or not and I have other teeth laying sideways in my gum along the bottom because my mouth is too small for them.

@Gatoadigrado I think your right there because the pain is going from the back right to a tooth at the front and up in to my ear I can only assume it’s the wisdom tooth causing it all because that’s where i’m getting most of the pain and the gum is really sore to touch.

Could be an infection in your gum. These can cause horrendous pain, but antibiotics will sort it out

Yousicktwistedfruit · 02/07/2019 10:22

@Missillusioned I didn’t think about that you might be right there and it may not be my wisdom tooth after all I just assumed it was because of where the pain is coming from. Thank you.

YABU. Get to the dentist ASAP. You will give yourself an infection.

Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

Yousicktwistedfruit · 02/07/2019 10:36

@bellagood I will be going to the dentist I had no plans to pull any teeth out myself I wouldn’t know how to. Thank you I will be glad to be rid of this god awful pain.

Unfortunately the NHS has removed many things that used to be covered under the NHS dental contracts so the dentists in NHS practice do not get paid to perform them now like they did years ago. We get lots of patients refered into maxfac with things that could easily be done in practice but their dentist refers the work outside as either they are not confident enough to carryout the work personally or the person has medical issues which they would rather not deal with. There are now strict NICE guidelines that you have to meet to even get surgical removal in maxfac or dental hosp.
To perform sedation you have to take further training and gain formal qualifications to be able to perform this and as the NHS dont cover it under general practice contracts due to the time it takes to perform & recovery time for the patient before they can leave the premises and so its fallen under the "private" blanket so they can charge what ever they like for it in reality.
This is why so many dentists are now going private as there are just too many restricitions on what can be performed under the NHS guidelines and the money is in private work now.Im not saying it is right and of course many NHS dentists are committed to their patients but some really arent thats just how it is currently.

bellagood · 02/07/2019 10:42

@Yousicktwistedfruit Hope you feel better, and are pain free, very soon. Smile

Yousicktwistedfruit · 02/07/2019 11:39

@shazkevincarrotlover I suppose the NHS have to make cuts where they can but it sounds like they are making it a lot harder on dentists to do their jobs. I know the dentist that I use to go to as a child left his practice and it got made in to a private dentists so we could no longer go there but if there’s more money to be made doing private work then they will jump ship not fair on those of us that can’t pay private prices but even dentists have bills to pay and if that’s where the money is that’s where they’ll go.

@bellagood thank you I can’t wait to be rid of this pain.

Shazkevincarrotlover, I am under an NHS Dentist. And have been lucky enough to receive Sedation on a few occasions .It costs about £50 .My surgery is the only one for several miles .They have their own room with medical team .

Yousicktwistedfruit · 02/07/2019 13:00

@shazkevincarrotlover your lucky I have to travel to specialist sedation clinic 40 minutes away to get my dental treatment done they have long waiting lists because they only do the sedation on one day a week because that’s they only time they can get the anesthetist in and they aren’t the best last time I went they didn’t give me enough sedation because they put most of it under the skin in the back of my hand blamed that on the small veins in my hands.
