21 weeks pregnant and have a 10cm ovarian cyst

I’ve searched and searched and my consultant seems clueless. I have recently had a cyst on my right ovary drained as I was in agony when it started to twist at 16weeks of my pregnancy. It had grown to 13cm and was under my ribs.
I received a letter stating I should be fine now until the end of my pregnancy and then have the cyst tissue removed.
Unfortunately I had a scan 3 weeks later and it had grown again to 10cm. I am so concerned because I don’t seem to be getting any answers.
I am now 21 weeks and having sharp pains off and on during the day but it is not as excruciating as it was when it was twisting.
Anyone been in this position before?

I had the same exact thing. Found the cyst in my 12 week scan and it grew to 18cm by the end of my pregnancy. It was uncomfortable especially at the end but caused absolutely no problems.

I ended up have a c-section for unrelated reasons and they decided to remove it at the same time. Everything went well and further analysis showed nothing sinister.

Try not to worry (I know it is hard), it didn’t affect my pregnancy at all other than some discomfort.

Thanks @dogsandbabies did you do less or carry on as normal whilst pregnant?

I had the same on my ovary. I had extra scans near the end and they planned to remove it if I needed a section. I didn't so they removed it 6 months post partum. Sometimes the can resolve themselves after pregnancy.

Bluestar17 · 01/07/2019 22:57

Thanks @lunar1 did you have any pains I’m wondering what to expect as baby grows. Especially since it’s already twisted once.

A family member had this. She was in agony. Ended up having it removed successfully at 28 weeks. Baby born 10 weeks later

Bluestar17 · 01/07/2019 23:11

Was it keyhole surgery or major surgery @nespressowoo? Did her delivery go okay 10weeks later?

Sorry to be a pain and ask all these questions I just want to be as prepared as possible for every eventuality

It was like period pain on and off throughout the pregnancy.

nespressowoo · 01/07/2019 23:13

It was keyhole. She ended up with a section due to failure to progress, not related to the previous surgery at all. She'd had a previous section too due to same reasons.

Thank you both for replying. I suppose surgery is going to be inevitable but when il have to wait and see.

I had this but earlier in the pregnancy had a large cyst that kept growing it caused an ovarian torsion. I was extremely unwell literally felt like I would die, I had a scan in which they couldn't see what the problem was but they did see an internal bleed and I was rushed into theatre for emergency surgery where they discovered the torsion. They removed the cyst and fixed up my insides and I felt a million times better as soon as I woke up...the after surgery pain was nothing in comparison to the pain prior to the surgery. The cyst was tested non suspicious and the pregnancy carried on. I did deliver pre term but the surgery was only one of a list of what could have been contributing factors for pre term delivery. No issues since

Bluestar17 · 02/07/2019 07:48

Thanks @BitOfAKerfuffle how far gone was your emergency surgery and how early did you deliver and was the labour c section too?

Sorry you're going through this OP, I had the same. Caused extreme pain from 20 weeks onwards as baby got bigger. Was told surgery too risky due to positioning of cyst and baby, so had to hang on by taking oramorph daily, then ended up with a c section to deliver baby and remove cyst at 33 weeks. Baby was small but fine thankfully, had
a short stay in NICU while we established feeding. Hopefully they can drain your cyst again without delivering baby early

HungrySleepyGrumpy · 02/07/2019 09:46

I also remember how frustrating it is not to get any clear answers from doctors. I must have seen 20 different consultants, all saying different things. Surgery must be done before 26 weeks, surgery too risky before 28-30 weeks, keyhole draining possible, keyhole draining not possible, need an MRI to view cyst properly, MRI too risky for baby, and so on!

Bluestar17 · 02/07/2019 10:49

Yes @HungrySleepyGrumpy I’ve had so many different consultants advising me and my husband it’s not clear what’s okay.
They may drain again but I know now baby might be too big.

If you're getting lots of conflicting advice ask for the consultants and doctors involved to discuss your case and come up with a care plan together. I love the NHS but everyone is so overstretched they dont talk to one another and you end up stuck in the middle wondering whose treatment plan you should be following.

I had a breakdown during one hospital stay because I was being told different things each day with no end in sight and it finally got too much for me to handle. I complained and after that I got much better continuity of care.

It's a tricky medical situation so I understand why there are so many conflicting opinions on treatment plans, but ultimately they should have been figured that out between themselves and presenting the best options to me. If they talk together they can understand each other's reasons for the treatment plan, something which isn't always clear from just reading an overview on your medical notes.

Sorry for the ramble, hope you get some clarity soon.

Bluestar17 · 03/07/2019 06:46

Thanks @HungrySleepyGrumpy I said that last time as I agree it was getting so frustrating so I asked if everyone involved can be at my next consultation because I want a plan in place now so we know what to prepare for. Hopefully within the next two weeks nothing worsens before the appointment.

I had surgery at 8/9 weeks pregnant but they said they would be more willing to do it after first trimester especially as i was already high risk of miscarriage (recurrent miscarriage issues) but in the end it was an emergency so there was no other option the risks to me and to the pregnancy just had to be weighed up and tbh it was a fast decision. I remember saying i wanted some time to think about what i wanted to do and i was pretty much told that there wasnt time to think about what to do we just need to get this done now.
I went into labour then at 28 weeks pregnant was in delivery suite and then they gave me something as a last ditch attempt to try to stop labour (dunno what it was) and it worked however i was in hospital after that was 4cm dilated and bleeding regularly as well but i delievered a healthy baby normal delivery at 36 weeks.

You need to get speaking to the consultant and get them to make a plan so at least you know what is happening in a few different situations....(cyst growing, ovary twisting etc) and it takes some of the worry away then

Bluestar17 · 03/07/2019 11:25

Thanks @BitOfAKerfuffle I’ll definitely do that
