To ask about secondary schools in manchester

Ceci03 · 01/07/2019 14:59

I might have a job in uni of manchester and am doing some groundwork . Ds is turning 11 in July. Im presuming he would have to go into secondary. Am coming from Ireland where he has 2 more years left in primary so it will be a bit of shock to him. Presumably he can't go to a grammar school a school he hasn't done the 11+. Is there a not to overdo expensive area with a good ish school, I'm looking for a fairly easy going school with lots of sport. What area should I start with. People tell me to start wit him the school but I'm overwhelmed ...! TIA

Go for Trafford area. If you're Catholic, St Patrick's in Eccles is good. Bramhall School apparently has a good and lovely head. Cheadle Hulme High School is good. Don't discount Grammars. Ring some of the Trafford Grammars for advice e.g. Urmston, Altrincham, Sale, Stretford, Loreto.

Any idea which area you plan to live in?

Liverbird77 · 01/07/2019 15:06

Start with the grammars, beginning with Altrincham Boys'.

GabriellaMontez · 01/07/2019 15:08

Are you catholic?

If he's turning 11 in July then you will have missed the normal secondary admission admissions round for year 7. Many schools will already be full for September, and this will limit your choice. You are best ringing round to find out which schools have places.

My DD attended St Patrick’s in Eccles. It’s an excellent school and I can highly recommend it. Good luck

It's really hard to get into school in Manchester at the moment. If you can afford private, go for it unless you want him to end up in a sink school. (Current school appeal officer)

Jaypurs OP, it's all so different, isn't it?

Kit30 · 01/07/2019 20:28

Because it was mentioned upthread here's a link to the Trafford info page www.trafford.gov.uk/residents/schools/school-admissions/admissions.aspx Also,If you're Catholic (or not) try St Ambrose in Hale Barns www.st-ambrosecollege.org.uk
Hard to know what to tell you, Ceci03, if you're not set on an area yet.

Oh, and be aware that Trafford is part of Greater Manchester but not 'Manchester' as far as the education authority goes - as I said it all depends where you're planning to live.
