UK summer holidays start far too late

We're already into summer, the weather is lovely and it's weeks until the school holidays start.

July is consistently the warmest month in the UK, yet the kids (and teachers) spend it on school and parents commuting and at work. www.statista.com/statistics/322658/monthly-average-daily-temperatures-in-the-united-kingdom-uk/. The rest of Europe is on holiday already.

Aibu to think they should start earlier?

Agreed

Waveysnail · 01/07/2019 14:24

No. Because then us folks from ireland, NI and Scotland wouldnt get those lovely 2/3 holiday weeks that's arnt manic busy in england Grin

NCforthis2019 · 01/07/2019 14:24

..... not for us, my child finishes school this week :-) but agree - should start early

TheGlaikitRambler · 01/07/2019 14:24

I am in the UK and our summer holidays have started.

implantsandaDyson · 01/07/2019 14:25

I take it you mean English school holidays, I'm not sure about Welsh but I know Scottish school holidays start earlier and I'm in NI and my kids are already off. My post primary aged kids have already been off for a week and my primary school aged kid finished last week.

Mummyshark2019 · 01/07/2019 14:25

Agreed!!

NoBaggyPants · 01/07/2019 14:25

Not sure about other countries but Germany don't break up until the end of the month. France are still at school too.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/07/2019 14:27

Scottish schools have broken up.

FlyingElbows · 01/07/2019 14:27

Yabu. Please keep your ENGLISH holidays because the rest of us can then keep on getting cheaper flights from English airports when we're on holiday and you're not. Bonus.

TheGlaikitRambler · 01/07/2019 14:29

I do love those 3 weeks we get in July when the English schools are still in, tourist places are less busy and everything is cheaper!

gamerchick · 01/07/2019 14:29

Aye as long as they go back earlier. 7 weeks off here. My youngling wouldn't come with much longer, he loves school.

gamerchick · 01/07/2019 14:29

*cope

nancy75 · 01/07/2019 14:30

If the holidays started earlier the 15 week winter term would be even longer - it's bad enough as it is!

DonkeyHohtay · 01/07/2019 14:32

You mean English and Welsh holidays. Not UK.

Scotland and Northern Ireland on holiday already.

prettybird · 01/07/2019 14:34

Indeed. I used to love the "cheaper" 3-4 weeks before the English school holidays started Grin Glasgow schools broke up last Thursday - although now that my ds is at Uni, we are no longer constrained by school term times.

I'll ignore the open goal of someone yet again assuming that English school holiday timing applies across the whole of the UK Wink

TheGlaikitRambler · 01/07/2019 14:34

Kids in Scotland cope fine. I presume the do in NI as well.

prettybird · 01/07/2019 14:35

That's why we have the October Week! Grin

implantsandaDyson · 01/07/2019 14:37

Mine cope fine - they get the guts of nine weeks off for the summer, then a week off at Halloween.

TheGlaikitRambler · 01/07/2019 14:38

prettybird October fortnight here!

JE17 · 01/07/2019 14:39

I'm in Germany and my kids have already broken up. The summer holidays here are staggered by state so that the whole country isn't off at once. The holidays can begin as early as third week of June or as late as beginning of August. I like it when our holidays start much earlier than England's, we can always find accommodation, the weather is usually good and it's not crowded everywhere. We do usually enjoy good weather when we visit in July.

DonkeyHohtay · 01/07/2019 14:39

The winter term starts mid August, then we usually get a Friday/Monday at the end of September, a week in October, usually with a day ragged on as a teacher training day. We cope.

July is holiday month. Being in school until the end of July is exceptionally weird to anyone who grew up north of the border.

And yes to the benefit of being able to fly from Manchester or via gatwick for cheap flights!

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/07/2019 14:39

We have September weekend here too

marvellousnightforamooncup · 01/07/2019 14:41

Please don't make English schools holiday at the same time as Scottish ones.

isthatapugunicorn · 01/07/2019 14:41

Agreed! I’m from N.I. And got all of July/aug off - I feel for my English kids who have another 3 weeks to go and quite frankly are doing sweet f -all at school! I’d rather ditch the pointless weeks in Feb and give the kids a decent summer break.

dreichuplands · 01/07/2019 14:42

My DC have broken up, they are overseas but follow a private English timetable so I am assuming that at least some private English schools have broken up as well as the Scottish ones?
