To think it is totally hypocritical of those people at Glastonbury

To have cheered David Attenborough when he talked about saving the planet given the shit tip they leave the festival site in.

Not everyone drops their litter, a lot do, but a lot don’t.... so you can’t really call all people clapping hypocrites of you don’t know is dropping and who isn’t. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Their trying and it is a step in the right direction.

BlueSkiesLies · 01/07/2019 12:44

The owners have said in the past they think the future of glasto will be entirely pre-erected tents to remove the discarded tent issue.

Most people are pretty good with clearing up but it only takes a minority of the 200,000 people there to make things look messy.

Better to do something to try and be more environmentally friendly than do nothing

I agree, having the pyramid stage festooned with Greenpeace banners then having acts flying in from around the world, people travelling from all over the UK and beyond to attend. It doesn't sit right with me.

kateandme · 01/07/2019 12:50

im far less ggreen than i want to be.and feel lots of guilt about it.and try to do more each day and be conscious of it etc etc but even i would cheer the great lord himself.he is amazing in my eyes and i have a real hero worship of him.ive adored hm since i was a kid,his work, his ideals, his kindness and programs.i think hes brilliant.

ReanimatedSGB · 01/07/2019 12:51

Every year around this time, my folky friends like to post pictures of end-of-event campsites at folk and morris events. We clean up after ourselves: every cigarette end, scrap of paper, empty gin bottle etc is correctly disposed of. A large number of people who go to events like Glastonbury or Reading leave behind everything they brought with them; tents, sleeping kit, cool boxes, along with any amount of wrappers and bottles and food waste.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 01/07/2019 13:13

I get what you mean OP

It's the same thing as a friend of mine who is super eco on Facebook, lots of sad face posts about saving the planet and how people should consume less and use less fuel/drive less. And she then posted all these pics of their recent trip to Oz and NZ....[consfused]

it's the "do as I say, don't do as I do" attitude that grates

Eco warriors can be a bit preachy and holier-than-thou, and at the same time can be such hypocrites.

And yes, I believe climate activists are RIGHT. But I still don't like hypocrites, or being preached to.

Setting single-use tents on fire, generating masses of rubbish and generally happily indulging in a consumerist society, whilst simultaneously thinking they are so green, and that OTHER people are the problem..... Hmm

Gone2far · 01/07/2019 13:14

A friend's son was a cleaner upper there and told me that many people bought 2 tents. One to sleep in. One to go to the toilet in. Can't see the latter being reused.

Ladymargarethall · 01/07/2019 13:14

Reanimated I suspect that is easier on a smaller scale.

Gone2far · 01/07/2019 13:18

We live in a student city and I'm always shocked at the end of term when you see the piles of household stuff left out for the binmen outside student flats. Bought at the beginning of term and chucked at the end. Probably by people who vote Green.
It would be wonderful to go back to when stuff wasn't so bloody cheap.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/07/2019 13:20

Gone2Far. I think that’s the case, really disgusting.

justasking111 · 01/07/2019 13:22

I am always baffled living in Snowdonia to see rubbish left, empty containers and bottles. Now those containers were full and heavy when people heaved them up the hill, they were then emptied so are now light and easy to carry down. So why not take them back with you?

As for Glastonbury fingers crossed they will have listened to Attenborough and will bring less next time.

pepperpot99 · 01/07/2019 13:30

Yeah, but the Cure were bloody awesome, right? Wink.

Soz. As you were. Grin.

GreenGrowTheRushesOhh · 01/07/2019 13:31

It would be wonderful to go back to when stuff wasn't so bloody cheap.

I think that day's fast approaching tbh. I guess within ten years or so.

(This is based on nothing scientific, just something I was thinking about the other day. Prices surely have to skyrocket again, as resources become scarce.)

Dungeondragon15 · 01/07/2019 13:34

Maybe the people cheering weren't the ones who leave rubbish. There are 200,000 people there. You can't say that because some leave rubbish that everyone else is hypocritical.

RosesAndRaindrops · 01/07/2019 13:36

AtmosClock
Not sure I see the fuss. On a bigger scale it’s a bit like leaving a plastic beaker under your seat when you leave the cinema. The site will be cleaned up

Throwing your plastic beaker under your seat isn't acceptable either!
I mean, FFS, I don't get your mindset.
"Meh, I'll just chuck it here as somebody else will clear up after me?"
How bloody hard is it just to take it with you until you find a bin?
Even my kids know this and do automatically, ingrained now as a tween and a teen and find a bin out of habit!
It's a lazy, entitled attitude to think someone will clear up after you and the reason parks and laybys etc are so litter filled.
Argh rant over, but litter chuckers piss me off!

ArtichokeAardvark · 01/07/2019 13:36

@AtmosClock Are you serious? People who leave their plastic cups under their seats at the cinema are vile - especially when there is almost always someone standing at the door with a binbag or at least a bin nearby. Why on earth should someone have to clean up after you, just because it's going to be done doesn't make it acceptable!

And 100% agree that the rubbish left behind at Glastonbury is unreal. It's like Extinction Rebellion - I work near Waterloo Bridge and the crap they left behind after their 'green' protest was disgusting and took forever for the police and street cleaners to clear up. It's all very well shouting for environmental change, but do the grubby work yourself? Nah...

RosesAndRaindrops · 01/07/2019 13:38

Are you serious? People who leave their plastic cups under their seats at the cinema are vile - especially when there is almost always someone standing at the door with a binbag or at least a bin nearby.

Exactly, I mean WTF? We were at the cinema last week and there are literally bins right outside the screen, there's no excuse!

Gth1234 · 01/07/2019 13:46

It's normal left-winger save the planet type behaviour.
I wonder how many tents were left behind.

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2019 13:47

do people doing the London to brighton bike ride take their rubbish home?

Not L to B, it’s too far away, but I did it plenty of times when I lived in London, but I do do similar events, and I always take my rubbish home, and would not hesitate to challenge anyone throwing their bottle of gel wrapper in the verge. The events I do tend to be very conscientious about cleaning up,

Magnificentbeast · 01/07/2019 13:48

When I go I use the bins and take my stuff home with me.

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2019 13:50

The disposable tears really hack me off. It’s such entitled behaviour, and has such a long term impact. I was camping recently in my 20 year old tent, with someone in a tent his dad had bought in 1969 and has been. In regular use since. I am a big believer in buying well, once. Or hiring/borrowing something.

marnzstar · 01/07/2019 13:53

Why don't we talk about the positivity of festivals and bringing people together or do we all just want to be stuck at home behind our screens to connect with others. So it might cost them 800,000 to clean up - well lucky buggers who earn that money picking up other peeps rubbish. Think the issue lies with the fact that we create the crap in the first place. We need to think on a higher level people! Let's not produce the rubbish. Boycott the stuff wrapped in plastic or that comes in plastic! Don't buy cheap stuff with a short life span and a massive footprint. That's what I do and that's what I'm teaching my kids to do. Shop at local markets and greengrocers. There are so many things we can all do as individuals.

pepperpot99 · 01/07/2019 13:54

"It's normal left winger save the planet type behaviour".

Yeah bleedin lefties eh? tories of course wouldn't give a shit and would actively seek to use as many plastic bottles as possible, having been flown in to Glasto via private jet.

mintich · 01/07/2019 13:54

If the bins weren't overflowing, they probably would!
