to think that 40 pages of maths homework is too much for a 7y old in his summer holidays?

On the last day of term, Ds1's teacher merrily handed him his maths book (which is one of those fill in ones) with "Please complete" written on the top. He has only just started it so there are at least 40 pages of sums to do. It takes him about 15mins to do a page not counting the time I have to spend nagging him to do it. And what's more I'm supposed to mark it! (which is not that arduous but apparently the teacher said "I will not have time to be marking 30 maths book on the first day of term".

I don't remember getting homework until I was in secondary school and I really think it's a bit much to expect him to all that in what is supposed to be his break.

How can anyone say it's only one page a day?????
Imagine being 7 years old and waking up every day of the holidays knowing there's a maths sheet to do.
Fair enough if that's what they like to do with their spare time but even as a parent my heart would have sunk at the sight of something like this on the last day.
Also some children loathe school, at least part of their childhood should be spent without worrying about 'sheets'.

Another thing, how can children forget stuff in 6 weeks? Independent schools have 10 weeks holiday does that mean it takes them even longer to remember?

I agree wheresthehamster - also how many adults fail to stick at something for 15min each day such as exercise or physio etc, let alone kids. I don't know what the rest of the class have got. I think they are all at different stages in different books so it means that some might be near the end of the book and only have a few pages, others might have more. Ds1 was probably unlucky being so near the beginning of his particular book at this point.

blimey, I must be out of touch, I am sure I never had any homework til secondary school, and it surprises me to hear a 7yo has to do any.
My parents used to get us to do a scrapbook of our holiday, but no maths or anything like that. From what people are saying it seems fairly common for children this young to have homework?
Even if it is, 40 pages seems a bit much to me.
