... just in case it's an amount of money that could be spent on other things such as... idk.... alleviating desperate poverty, lack of access to clean water, illegal dumping of waste and oil into the oceans etc etc. Just off the top of my head like.

They're all charities which get money donated from the Glastonbury profits, so I doubt they have paid.

CheeseToastieAndABrew · 30/06/2019 20:01

Nothing. 2 million or more is split between charities including Greenpeace. It a fundamental of Glastonbury.

applepineapple · 30/06/2019 20:02

I expect they pay their CEO more...

SuperMumTum · 30/06/2019 20:04

Absolutely nothing. Loads of money from the festival goes to those specific charities.

NoBaggyPants · 30/06/2019 20:05

Advertising is used where it will prompt more donations than the initial cost, as well as raising awareness to a huge audience.

It's not massively expensive to get banners made, and they won't have paid to put it up.

AntiHop · 30/06/2019 20:05

Charities have to advertise to encourage donations. I'm sure they wish they could rely on people to donate without encouragement but that's not the case.

The charities aren't just spending that money for the sake of it you know. They're answerable to the charity commission.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to say that they volunteer for charity that costs almost nothing to run. But international charities have a completely different scale of costs.

BagpussAteMyHomework · 30/06/2019 20:05

Would you support a charity you had never heard of? Charities need to be in the public eye if they rely on public donations.

They don’t pay anything. Glastonbury raises money for those charities.

StoorieHoose · 30/06/2019 20:06

They have been the same three names on the pyramid stage for at least the last 25 years and probably paid £0

Roundtheislands · 30/06/2019 20:07

That told you OP! Wink

WaterAid have volunteers on site promoting the work they do, and also helping out with things like she-pees. The volunteers donate to WaterAid too.

Teatimeted · 30/06/2019 20:08

I used to work for a small (well, not well known) charity and we had close to £500k marketing budget. Fundraising spent over £1m a year, but we have a board of trustees that approve all activity and we have a strict ROI.

Yes, that money could have gone on the people the charity was set up for, but we'd be out of 'business' in a matter of years if that was the case.

It's classic speculate to accumulate.

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 30/06/2019 20:09

What a snippy post

WineIsMyCarb · 30/06/2019 20:12

Have crawled under coffee table with tail between legs indeed @Roundtheislands!
And a biscuit! You missed my head though!!
We donate to smaller local charities which we found based on their purpose/goal/target (whatever the word is) and found out their name then. May I recommend donating to local smaller charities too?

Delighted @TestingTestingWonTooFree! They could have been a bit more forceful and arsed in putting me in my place though, don't you think?

Thanks for the answers everyone. Considering myself told!! Grin

Haha, nice one OP!

baileys6904 · 30/06/2019 22:10

Actually although technically charity commission is meant to stop any wrong doing within a charity, the latest scandals show exactly how little control they have over the industry and cutbacks have hurt them just as much as other services
I work for 2 small charities, neither of which have any sort of marketing budget and live a very hand to mouth existence. And we are classed as one of the bigger small charities and as we are not front line, donations are literally zero.
Working with the voluntary sector, I agree with the OP and far more could be done to help grass roots organisations in this country with even relatively small amounts being able to do so much!

OneShotLattePlease · 30/06/2019 22:16

Oh fair enough, you’ve got the message.
I was coming to say, no-one moans about big names like Coca Cola or Tesco advertising rather than paying overseas workers a better wage or price for goods though. Why do we need Tesco adverts? We all know who they are and what they sell...or their marketing budget could be used to cut their prices...my point is, this is the way of the world, that’s not the charities fault but they really do get blamed for operating like businesses

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 30/06/2019 23:38

OP, can i hide with you, I voted YABU then read that Glasto donate £millions and said charities pay £0.

Now...about the plastic...
