AIBU to think we will be able to hire an after school nanny?

For various complicated reasons, mostly beyond our control, we have ended up with our two DC in school and (the same) school nursery, both finishing at 3pm. DH works full time and I work 4 days a week 9-5. We live in zone 3 London.

AIBU to think that we will be able to find someone who wants to do 3 hours a day, 4 days a week? Or is this simply not enough hours. We would be prepared to pay up to £15 an hour.

I’m really starting to panic that we won’t be able to find anyone...

Since they are at the same location anyway, a childminder seems an easy answer?

CassianAndor · 30/06/2019 16:12

Child minder, surely. There are loads who pick up from our school.

JoJoSM2 · 30/06/2019 16:13

I’m sure you’ll find someone. There will be people looking for sth very part time and this sounds excellent for that.

Merryoldgoat · 30/06/2019 16:14

Yup - my CM does school pickup and I collect from her.

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/06/2019 16:15

Childminder is the answer. But as a student I did 3 hours care after school for 2 children, just Wednesdays, for a couple of years. Worked well for me and them. Maybe an option?

Merryoldgoat · 30/06/2019 16:15

You might have issues with the money and pay up to your limit - mine is £7 per hour per child in Zone 4

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 30/06/2019 16:16

You make it sound like a really complicated and unusual situation. Don’t most people have kids in (the same) school until 3pm and work until after that?

Rhayader · 30/06/2019 16:17

Thanks all, I had a look on childcare.co.uk for childminders that pick up from the school but there was only one and they lived in the opposite direction from (relative to the school) us which would make our commute a bit of a nightmare - nowhere near the tube station and more like zone 4, so picking up the kids about 6:30, home at 7 which is just too late in the day for a 3 year old 🙁. It’s a religious school so has a massive geographical catchment.

Koru Kids is what you need. They specialise in after school nannies. We have had two from there, 3 days at 3 hours per day.

The school has an after school club which most people send their kids to, as it is cheap and good, but it’s from reception age only. The oldest dc has gone there for the last two years which youngest dc has gone to a private nursery (which has shut down at very short notice do to the landlord converting it into flats)

As the nursery is term time only and 8:30-3 most parents do not work or work very part time.

Childminders have to pay to use childcare.co.uk so not all will be on there. When a friend had a after school nanny found that none stayed in job longer than few months as found something with more hours.

Thanks we’ve registered with them! But only registered this week. How long did it take for them to give you matches?

I’ve also had a look on student nannies but there doesn’t seem to be many people on there, but I’m wondering if we are perhaps a little bit early for September..

Hi, we were in the same position, both working central/west London but living out East. We found a fabulous after school nanny through care.co.uk. She collected the girls from school, did the last nights washing up, made the girls their dinner etc, then I’d be home by 715ish for bath time etc. We paid £10 per hour. Good luck!

Mayday19 · 30/06/2019 16:23

None of the Childminders I've used has been on childcare.co.uk. You need (I would suggest) to find a parents' group on Facebook for the school and ask on there. Or ask in the school itself, or the local authority where I live also has a list of local Childminders.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 30/06/2019 16:25

Sorry, it’s this site;
www.care.com/en-gb/

DCIRozHuntley · 30/06/2019 16:27

I'm not in London but most childminders round here have a Facebook presence, or people ask in our local "Parents in Telford" (or wherever) groups for recommendations.

£10 per hour as suggested by PP sounds ridiculously cheap, even a cleaner round here is £12 and I'm in a small city considerably cheaper than London. I'd expect to pay up to your limit and possibly beyond if a childminder is c. £7 per child.

WalnutCabinet · 30/06/2019 16:32

So nannies in London are paid net not gross

12 years ago- unqualified was £10 per hours net based on a 50 hour week. A 12 hour week would be more per hours as they need to transfer between jobs etc

WalnutCabinet · 30/06/2019 16:35

So net is about £150 based on a 12 hour week but I imagine that it is more now. That was for unqualified (new arrival) nanny.

eurochick · 30/06/2019 16:47

I've used nannies for the past 4.5 years. I've always offered a gross salary. I'm in outer London.

CassianAndor · 30/06/2019 16:49

Ask around at school, there will be others in the same boat as you re having one too young for after school club.

Merryoldgoat · 30/06/2019 16:49

Offering a net salary is bloody stupid. How much they get net is dictated by tax code, not the employer. Sure, most people are on the standard personal allowance but if there are any historic issues you could find yourself massively overpaying.

I don’t know any other group of people who expect salaries to be quoted net.

CloudRusting · 30/06/2019 16:53

This is exactly what Koru kids offer. They use uni students so realistically they may only stay a year.

Your alternative is an au pair.

Nannies in London are not paid net. They might wish to look at their pay in net terms but I know nobody who employs a nanny who has the pay rate contracted in net - that would be stupid particularly for a part time role.

Rhayader · 30/06/2019 16:53

Maybe a silly question but if someone was working term time, 12 hours a week for £15ph they would be earning well under the personal allowance anyway. It seems a bit odd that depending on what other jobs they had I would have to pay more?

Gumtree is a good place to advertise.

£10/h is below the London living wage so pretty unethical...

gabster33 · 30/06/2019 16:56

Koru kids if £13 per hour and hopefully you can get sorted in September. Bubble app also offer after school. Try next door app you may find someone there.
